Idina Menzel album: Why Disney star ISN’T singing anything from Frozen as new album out

Idina Menzel is famed for her Broadway roles in musicals such as Wicked and Rent. Her voice is so distinctive she is known by millions around the globe – especially for her voice role as Elsa in Frozen. Menzel is singing on Strictly Come Dancing this weekend – but some fans may be surprised to find out she is not singing music from the iconic Disney film.

Idina Menzel’s career has continued to flourish since she had her first role in Broadway in the 1996 production of Rent.

She was nominated for a Tony Award for her portrayal as Maureen Johnson in the show, and later revived the character for the 2005 film version.

After appearing in Rent, Menzel’s career went from strength to strength and she began appearing in small film roles as well as various other big production including Hair, The Vagina Monologues and then, in 2003, Wicked.

She originated the role of Elphaba in this musical, which saw her win the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

Following this, she began appearing in larger films, such as Disney’s Enchanted, after which she continued her work on the stage before getting her biggest role to date: Elsa in Frozen.

She has performed as Elsa in various Disney spin-offs, as well as 2018’s Ralph Breaks the Internet.

Her most recent role outside of Frozen is in the new Adam Sandler film Uncut Gems, which has been lauded as a potential awards movie.

Throughout these years she has also had roles in TV, notable playing Shelby Corcoran in Glee, before returning to The Glee Project as herself.

She also sang in Rent: Live, though performed as herself rather than Maureen, the character which made her.

It has also been reported that she will portray the Stepmother in an upcoming version of Cinderella starring Camilla Cabello in the lead role.

This would be a “modern musical” version of the film, which had its live-action remake in 2015.

But with all this being said, why is Menzel not performing a song from Frozen on Strictly Come Dancing?

Alongside her work in theatre, film and TV, Menzel has also released various albums, with her first called Still I Can’t Be Still in 1998.

The most recent is called Christmas: A Season of Love, which is released this year.

On the album are songs featuring her Frozen co-star, Josh Gad, as well as a song written by the Frozen soundtrack composers, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, which features Ariana Grande.

However, the song she is performing on the show is called Seasons of Love, which is from Rent.

Given the number of time Menzel has performed in Rent, it is liked that Seasons of Love holds a special place in her heart.

As well as that, no songs from Frozen itself feature on the Christmas album, given its festive theme, meaning Menzel likely would not perform songs from that movie.

Frozen 2 is currently out in cinemas as well, so there may be the potential that singing a song from Frozen 2 could be a spoiler for viewers who have not yet made it to the cinema.

With Menzel’s voice being flawless every time she sings, let’s hope fans are happy to hear Seasons of Love.

Strictly Come Dancing is on BBC1 on Sunday at 7:20pm
