Jeremy Clarkson is trending on Twitter with hoax claims that the former Top Gear star is dead.
Social media users were left shocked and confused by the hashtag #RIPJeremyClarkson which began trending this week.
Hoax claims the controversial TV personality is dead have provoked a variety of entertaining responses from mocking users.
One joked: "I can't believe the big man's gone – tragically killed at the hands of a handbrake failure during a dual carriageway dogging session."
Another added: "Can't believe Jeremy Clarkson died by tasering himself in the nuts."
"Died trying to out-scan an Aldi checkout assistant – the world has truly lost a hero," said another.
One user tweeted: "Very sad. Loved his music," while jokingly attaching an image of American pop singer Kelly Clarkson.
Another person tweeted the star and asked: "Just need to know; are you dead?"
But others didn't see the funny side, with one saying: "If you are tweeting this false news and rejoicing, have a word with yourself! Sick people."
Another said: "Absolutely hideous how #RIPJeremyClarkson is trending when he's not even dead.
"Get a f***ing life to whoever got it trending. Weirdos."
While there is no evidence to suggest Clarkson, most recently known for his new show Clarkson's Farm on Amazon Prime, is dead, this is not the first time rumours of his death have shaken social media.
In September 2020, someone edited the Top Gear star's Wikipedia page to state he had died, stoking panic and confusion amongst fans.
The TV star – whose more recent series include The Grand Tour and Clarkson's Farm – has yet to speak out in light of the rumour.
