Piers Morgan says sorry to I’m A Celeb’s Sam Thompson as son slams ‘halfwit’ dig
Piers Morgan has said sorry for calling I’m A Celebrity winner Sam Thompson a “halfwit” – after he heard the TV star was a fan of his.
The broadcaster made waves this week when he had a swipe at Sam while taking at aim at former UKIP leader Nigel Farage, who came third in the jungle show. But he has now taken it back after his son Spencer had a word with him.
Piers had written on X alongside a snap of Nigel and a snake: “Congrats to Nigel Farage on losing a public vote for the seventh time, this time to an irritating reality TV halfwit in the lowest-rated series of I’m A Celebrity. And for ending up engulfed with snakes, an appropriate final humiliation for the biggest snake in Britain.”

Viewers were fuming, calling his comment about Sam – who has opened up about having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) – “disgraceful” and “offensive”. And Piers’ son Spencer later waded in on X, saying: “Sam is a really nice and very switched on guy. Would like to apologise on dad’s behalf for this misinformed tweet.”
But Piers has now changed his tune, sharing his new position with his social media followers. “UPDATE: My eldest son @spencermorgan93 knows @SamThompsonUK well and says he’s definitely not a halfwit, and is a really genuine down-to-earth guy who speaks highly of me,” he wrote.
“Apologies, Sam, I clearly misjudged you,” he added, along with a laughing emoji.
Fans were tickled, with one saying Piers’ apology post was “hilarious”. “You're wild Piers, you're wild,” said someone else.
One fan remarked: “Your tweets are a must read. They do make my days better. Literally. Witty and hilarious.” “You did the right thing Piers,” said another person. “You seem to have a fair minded son.”
“Maybe we will see you in the jungle next year @piersmorgan,” teased someone else.
Made In Chelsea star Sam was crowned King of the Jungle at the weekend, with boxing star Tony Bellew finishing second and Nigel coming third.
