Sir Elton John to undergo surgery after falling ‘awkwardly on hard surface’

Sir Elton John is due to have an operation on his hip in the next few days after he injured it last month.

The 74-year-old was forced to postpone his retirement tour again after falling “awkwardly on a hard surface”.

The singer said: “I’ve had to postpone limbo dancing for a little while. I’m going to have my hip operated on early in October.

“Then I shall be recuperating and doing my physiotherapy and hopefully I’ll be all right in a couple of months. So fingers crossed.”

He had planned gigs around Europe and the UK from October to December this year as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

But doctors advised him to get the op “as soon as possible”.

It comes weeks away from his collaborative album release date on October 22.

Despite having no intentions of writing music during lockdown, the musician’s album The Lockdown Sessions occur after a chance meeting with singer and producer Charlie Puth.

Sir Elton said: “We left Australia, we finished our tour, and we went to LA.

“And I was in a restaurant and then someone brought Charlie over, and I’d never met Charlie before and I was a big fan.

“And I found out that he lived four doors away from me in LA, and he said ‘Listen, if you’re bored, I have a studio if you want to write something’.

“I said ‘I’d love to write something with you, I’m not doing anything’.

"So I snuck up there in a mask and we wrote After All, which appears on the lockdown sessions.”

The album also features collaborations with big names such as Dua Lipa and Olly Alexander, many of whom Sir Elton says he had never met before working with them.

Elton’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which had already been put back a year from 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, is now expected to have its UK and European dates delayed until 2023.
