Andrew Lloyd Webber fans have been excited to see all of his stage shows come to life in a new way in cinema. While a number of them have been well received – including the Phantom of the Opera – the latest rendition of his works, Cats, was not well received.
The film involved a number of enormous stars, including Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, and Dame Judy Dench.
With Idris Elba taking up the iconic antagonistic role of Macavity, the entire film’s cast looked like it was going to make a memorable film.
Unfortunately, the film was extremely memorable for entirely separate reasons.
With many critics slamming the film for its odd motion capture, and erratic plot, Cats was quickly seen as a disaster.
Since then, its creator, Andrew Lloyd Webber, has stayed silent about the release of the film.
Until now, that is, as the legendary composer and director recently spoke out in an interview with The Sunday Times.
Speaking about the film specifically, Lloyd Webber explained what went wrong with the flick.
He said: “The problem with the film was that [director] Tom Hooper decided that he didn’t want anybody involved in it who was involved in the original show.”
The star went on to add: “The whole thing was ridiculous.”
Of course, this isn’t exactly the reaction the film’s creators would want from Lloyd Webber.
However it may seem the film’s problems are a known issue, as stars of the show James Corden and Rebel Wilson publicly joked about it during an Oscars 2020 skit.
During the gaffe the pair riffed on how bad some of the film’s visuals were in front of a crowd of the Hollywood elite.

This wasn’t the only time the film’s image was publicly addressed, as cinemas were given an updated version of the flick on opening day.
The Hollywood Reporter explained on the day: “On Friday — the movie’s opening day — Universal notified thousands of theatres they will be receiving an updated version of Tom Hooper’s troubled film with ‘some improved visual effects.’
“Insiders say it is being done at Hooper’s request.
“Hooper has been upfront about the fact that he barely finished the CGI-heavy Cats in time for the Dec. 16 world premiere in New York City.
“Sources say he subsequently wanted to make more tweaks to certain effects.”
These CGI improvements were later rumoured to surround Dame Judy’s hands, which were missed out in the original cut.
Fans are as of yet unsure if there will be any more films released in the Cats universe.
Cats is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video now.
