Anton Du Beke was partnered with Jacqui Smith for this year’s Strictly Come Dancing but the pair were the first couple to be eliminated. However, Anton will be returning to the live shows as he joins Craig Revel Horwood and Shirley Ballas on the judging panel. Discussing his new role with Gethin Jones on Strictly spin-off It Takes Two, Anton light-heartedly slammed his professional co-stars with a cheeky swipe.

Discussing his new role, Anton said: “I can’t tell you how excited I am. I am so thrilled for so many reasons I just love love love the show as everyone knows.

“To be asked to fill in for Motsi for the next couple of weeks is an absolute honour.

Gethin asked: “What kind of judge are you going to be?”

“I should be as I am,” Anton replied. “I should be enthusiastic, I will be kind, I know everyone is going to be trying their best but I shall say what I see.

“And a lovely bit of advice from Len [Goodman]. He said be yourself and say what you see.”

“It’s going to be weird of you though because you’re judging your friends,” Gethin remarked.

“No,” Anton hit back. “I can’t actually stand any of them. I’ve been lying for years.

“I’m going to be judging the celebrities for what they’re producing.”

“I know the professionals are brilliant as we all know and they’re going to be putting together some incredible numbers,” he continued.

“I know what it’s like, you walk on to the floor even with someone who’s been rehearsing really well all week.

“And they look at you and say, ‘Which foot again?’ And you just have to do the best you can.”

Gethin interjected: “One couple you won’t be judging this weekend is Nicola and Katya who we’ve lost from the competition.

“Were you excited about their potential? What they could have done?”

Anton replied: “I was, they started really strongly. The Jive from last weekend which was tremendous, great energy, great choreography as normal from Katya.

“I thought the Quickstep they put together at the beginning was genius, absolutely brilliant.

“Their Couple’s Choice was amazing as well so I was really excited about what they were going to be doing over the next few weeks.

“You’ve been on Strictly Come Dancing since 1937,” Gethin joked. “What a journey you’ve been on.”

“I’m thrilled, honoured, overwhelmed, excited every year the show comes round,” Anton said.

“I love the show so much and to be a part of the show since the beginning and the only one left. I’m thrilled about that.

“It just feels my heart with joy and to be asked to step in for Motsi for a couple of weeks is the biggest compliment.”

Strictly Come Dancing continues on BBC One on Saturday at 7.10pm.
