'Better Call Saul': Is Kim Wexler's Client Mesa Verde in 'Breaking Bad'?

Mesa Verde Bank and Trust has played an integral part in Kim Wexler‘s (Rhea Seehorn) storyline in Better Call Saul. In earlier seasons of the show, the bank was represented by Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill (HHM), but when Kim left to work for Schweikart and Cokely, the bank left with her.

As Kim grapples with her own morality this season of Better Call Saul , she also struggles to find a way to help Mr. Acker without completely disregarding her moral compass. In “Dedicado a Max,” Kim worked to find a fair and justified means of stopping Mesa Verde from taking away Mr. Acker’s land while diehard fans pieced together another connection to Breaking Bad.

The problem with Mesa Verde

Mesa Verde’s CEO Kevin Wachtell (Rex Linn) is insistent on building a new call center on Mr. Acker’s plot of land. All of Kim’s previous efforts to help Mr. Acker maintain his property have failed — including having Saul Goodman represent him. As a last-ditch effort, she turns to Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) and his criminal contact, Mister X.

To stunt Mesa Verde’s rapid growth, Kim needs information to take Kevin down. She enlists the help of Mister X in the hopes that he’ll find the skeletons in Kevin’s closet. But with no illicit activity on his record — not even so much as an offshore account — it seems as though Kim’s at a loss in helping Mr. Acker.

The copyright infringement fan theory

One eagle-eyed Reddit user pointed out how one of the photos in Kevin’s office eerily resembles the Mesa Verde logo.

The theory is that the Mesa Verde logo is “based on a movie still of a New Mexico cowboy film from the 50s. Wachtell visited the set of the film as a child & loved the image so much that he based his whole company’s brand around it.”

The actor — and anyone else involved in the creation of the movie — is unaware of Kevin’s use of the image, which is problematic under copyright law. Whether Kim or Jimmy/Saul launches a full-fledged copyright infringement case against Kevin and Mesa Verde as a whole remains to be seen, but it’s the only way Kim will be able to prevent Mr. Acker from losing his land.

Is Mesa Verde Walter White’s bank in ‘Breaking Bad?’

Better Call Saul takes place in the same universe as Breaking Bad, so it is likely that the bank Walter White (Bryan Cranston) frequented was formerly Mesa Verde.

In the pilot of Breaking Bad, Walter frantically drove to his credit union to withdraw money so that Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) could buy the R.V. that will become their mobile meth lab. Walter pulled into the parking lot of Mesa Credit Union — a bank many fans are speculating was once Mesa Verde.

While Mesa isn’t an unusual name for a business in New Mexico, fans still think the two are connected in some way. It wouldn’t be that far fetched for show creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould to have made that detail work — after all, they’ve created a whole new story out of details from Breaking Bad!

Better Call Saul has highlighted the most minute of details in the past and fans have caught on, so the name of Walter White’s bank could be yet another nod to the original series.
