Many were worried that the sequel series to mammoth hit Breaking Bad would fail to live up to its predecessor. Thankfully, armed with masterful writing and all-round brilliant performances, AMC’s Better Call Saul has done just that. The sixth and final season is approaching early next year and, in the meantime, Saul Goodman actor Bob Odenkirk is dropping hints about Kim Wexler’s (played by Rhea Seehorn) fate.
Better Call Saul explores the origins of Breaking Bad’s sleazy lawyer and fan-favourite character Saul Goodman.
The series follows Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) as he rises from public defender to Saul Goodman, a lawyer for the worst criminals New Mexico has to offer.
Jimmy’s girlfriend and co-worker Kim Wexler has been struggling with her partner’s latest ventures and, throughout season five, it seems like Jimmy’s nefarious influence has impacted the beloved lawyer.
With many fans wondering if Kim will ‘break bad’ in season six, actor Odenkirk has dropped a huge hunt about her fate in the forthcoming season.
In the season five finale, Kim joked with Jimmy that she would like to kill Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian) for the way he has treated them both over the years.
Howard has been Jimmy’s nemesis ever since his deceased brother Chuck (Michael McKean) began working for Hamlin & McGill.
As Jimmy’s end has already been determined in Breaking Bad, fans are wondering where his loyal girlfriend fits into the endgame, and whether the events of season five will bring harm to her.
In an interview with The Guardian recently, Odenkirk revealed that he believes Kim is definitely alive by the time the storyline of Breaking Bad begins.
Odenkirk said: “I don’t think she dies. I think she’s in Albuquerque, and she’s still practising law.
“He’s still crossing paths with her,” he continued.
“To me, that would fuel his desire to be on billboards everywhere, because he wants her to see him.”
Odenkirk’s theory has a lot of merit as Jimmy is so in love with Kim that he would fail to live without her, so if she dies, it’s likely there is no way Jimmy would be able to live the life he lives when we meet him in Breaking Bad.
Better Call Saul is in a unique position for a television show as the ending has already been written.
The prequel series is just filling in the blanks and explaining how the characters got to that particular end.
However, Odenkirk’s theory about Kim’s fate would be an unexpected twist as many viewers believe that Kim either dies or moves far away from Albuquerque, New Mexico in the future.
Will Jimmy’s criminal exploits catch up with Kim, or will she survive and remain in Albuquerque as a lawyer?
Odenkirk also revealed that he doesn’t know how the final season will end and that he prefers “being surprised just like a viewer of the story”.
“I have my own theories, but they’re just basically fan theories,” the actor remarked.
The final season has a lot of loose ends to tie up, especially in regards to Kim as she does not make an appearance in Breaking Bad.
Will Kim go down the criminal route and attempt to kill Howard, or is there a darker storyline waiting for her?
Either way, there’s no doubt that the final season of Better Call Saul is going to be an extraordinary ride.
All seasons of Better Call Saul are available on Netflix now, and season six is scheduled for release sometime in 2022.
