Sarah Michelle Gellar stars in Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Buffy The Vampire Slayer is back on All 4 and Amazon Prime Video, and its original fans have since been showing the supernatural series to their own children. The teen drama series followed the title character, Buffy Summers (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar), who had been tasked with saving humanity from demons of the underworld. One of her enemies-turned-allies was the vampire Spike (James Marsters) and fans are keen to know how old Marsters was in the series.
The main antagonist, Spike, quickly became a fan-favourite character in the series due to his charm, humour and iconic look.
He had been born William but changed his name to Spike after he was sired by his lover Drucilla (Juliet Landau).
Spike was considered to be a breakout character in the series and a Spike spin-off had even been considered.
His character also appeared in the spin-off series, Angel, in which David Boreanaz reprised his role as the title character.
In Buffy, Spike had intended to kill the slayer, but over time instead developed feelings for her and ended up declaring his love.

How old was James Marsters as Spike?
James Marsters joined the cast of Buffy in season two as the English vampire, and he was taught how to put on a London accent by his co-star Anthony Stewart Head, who played Giles.
His role was only meant to be short as creator Joss Whedon had not imagined Spike would be a popular character.
However, due to his huge following, his character made it to the very last episode of the series.
The show started airing in 1997, and Marsters was born in 1962, meaning he was about 35 when he played the role of Spike.
Some fans find it hard to believe the actor is now 58, and he is married with one child.
His first episode was School Hard, which was the third episode of the second season, and he made an unforgettable entrance.
Blaring music from his car, he drove erratically to Sunnydale and declared he had come to kill the next slayer.
He and Drucilla had set out to kill Buffy, but as time went on Spike started to empathise with Buffy’s plight.
He understood her burden and appreciated the way she remained so strong despite the threat of an apocalypse.
His turbulent alliance with Buffy eventually turned into a genuine friendship. Sadly Buffy did not share the same romantic feelings as Spike, but she was grateful to have him around.

In the series finale, he died a hero by sacrificing himself so Buffy and the other potential slayers could escape from danger.
He was resurrected in the fifth season of the Angel spin-off, and again became one of the show’s protagonists.
After leaving the ‘Buffyverse’, Marsters went on to star in Smallville, Runaways and P.S. I Love You.
The star was married to Liane Davidson from 1989 until 1997 and they had a son together. He married his current wife, Patricia Jasmin Rahman, in 2011.
In an interview with Hypa Space, Marsters explained how he felt about Buffy and Spike’s relationship, saying: “It’s interesting because when Joss first told me about it I got all excited.
“A lot of it was really fun, a lot of it was really embarrassing because every scene I was naked and Sarah wasn’t.
“Believe me when you are in that position you want some backup, it’s not easy being the only naked person in front of, like, 50 people.”
He said he was keen to see whether they could redeem Spike’s character after he tried to abuse his power over Buffy.
In one particular scene, Spike started hurting Buffy to make her feel the pain she was causing him, and it was one of the more uncomfortable scenes for the actors.
Marsters added: “The only good thing I can say about it is I’m glad I had Sarah, I’m glad I had someone I trusted to do it with because it could have been a trainwreck. It really could have been bad.”
