Coronation Street fans baffled as Andy Whyment pictured with new job that’s worlds away from the cobbles | The Sun

CORONATION Street fans have been left baffled after show star Andy Whyment appeared to take on a new job role that is worlds away from acting.

In a new photo shared to X, formerly Twitter, long-running soap star Andy could be seen dressed in a football kit as he appeared to be the referee for a local football match.

Andy, famed for his role as dopey Kirk Sutherland on the ITV show, wore long black jogging bottoms to match his football top as he stood on the grass with a referee's flag in hand.

It appeared that Andy was helping out for a local match during his down days from Coronation Street.

An onlooker that snapped the star in his new role captioned the post: "Today's linesman!"

It left some fans in hysterics at the thought of Andy's infamous character Kirk shouting the marching orders on the pitch.

One re-shared the image and laughed: "I’m sorry but it would be hilarious being flagged offside by Kirk off Corrie."

Another replied with a string of laughing emoji's as they said: "Made my night this."

However, fans need not worry as Andy is not planning to quit the acting world to go into full time refereeing any time soon.

Earlier this year, Andy told The Sun that he planned to remain in Weatherfield for as long as possible.

Speaking after his exit from the South Africa special of I'm A Celebrity, Andy, 42, said in an exclusive chat: “I’ve seen a lot of people come and go, thinking they’re going to go on to bigger and better things but Corrie for me is my number one, it always has and always will be.

“I grew up watching it as a kid and when I drive up to those barriers in the morning and they lift them up, I think ‘I'm still working on Coronation Street’.

“If I’d told myself growing up I’d be there 23 years, it’s amazing and touch wood many more years to come.

“But I’ve got no intentions of leaving, I’ll stay in Corrie as long as they’ll have me and hopefully that’ll be many more years to come."
