Gemma Winter (played by Dolly-Rose Campbell) and Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) have slowly got settled as they look after their quads and Joseph. After a tough year in lockdown, the Coronation Street couple are getting back to normal with son Aled scheduled for a doctor’s appointment to talk about being deaf. However, Gemma and Chesney will be at loggerheads as they argue over what is best for their son.
Baby Aled was recently diagnosed with profound permanent hearing loss in both ears.
In coming scenes, Aled’s consultant confirms he’s an ideal candidate for a cochlear implant operation.
Chesney’s thrilled but Gemma’s not convinced the procedure is necessary.
When she says she doesn’t want Aled to have the operation as there are too many risks, Chesney’s shocked and asks Freda (Ali Briggs) to come round to talk about No.5 the pros and cons of the op.
However Gemma remains resolute that Aled isn’t having the operation.
Chesney despairs, pointing out that Aled is his son too and he should have a say in how they deal with his health.
Gemma’s later furious when Chesney misses their second sign language lesson.
Will the pair be able to see eye to eye about Aled’s future or could Chesney try to go behind Gemma’s back?
There’s also the possibility Gemma sees how busy her partner is and isn’t committed to learning sign language.
She may decide to put Aled first and ensure he doesn’t miss out on anything.
Could Chesney’s lack of interest in learning sign language prompt Gemma to agree to the surgery?
The storyline marks the first appearance of Freda since she left the cobbles in 2019 with Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden).
Freda and Norris moved to a gated community in 2020 but is back in Weatherfield and could be set to play a big role.
Will she support Gemma as she decides what to do about Aled’s future?
Elsewhere on the cobbles, Chesney’s sister Fiz Brown (Jenny McAlpine) is having trouble of her own as she watches Tryone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) move on with Alina Pop (Ruxandra Porojnicu).
In coming episodes, her heart sinks when Alina arrives dressed to the nines, closely followed by Tyrone in his new skinny jeans.
But Fiz has the last laugh when Tyrone’s grandmother Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) mocks his new looks.
Embarrassed Tyrone admits Alina picks his clothes out leaving Fiz even more irate as she realises how much control she has over her ex.
Tensions are already high between the couple with Fiz trying to stop Tyrone from seeing his daughter Ruby as revenge for his decision to leave her.
Fans of the ITV soap are divided over the storyline with some branding Alina and Tyrone’s pairing as “awful”.
“Tyrone and Fiz are better hate this storyline,” one viewer posted on Twitter.
Another added: “You aren’t expecting us to be impressed with it and this cr*p storyline are you? It’s totally embarrassing. What is wrong with your script writers.”
A third tweeted: “Oh god these two together are just awful. I’m sure she is lovely but she is a terrible actress.”
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV at 7.30pm.
