Coronation Street's Shona will be left in a coma after being shot by Gary Windass in explosive exit for Julia Goulding

CORONATION Street's Shona Ramsey is going to be left in a coma after being shot at Christmas.

The cafe assistant – who is played by Julia Goulding in the ITV soap – will be gunned down in dramatic scenes on Christmas Day when a fight breaks out between Gary Windass and Derek Milligan.

Crew have been filming heart-wrenching hospital scenes, with hubby David Platt, played by Jack P Shepherd, distraught.

A telly source said: "It’s an exciting storyline, with tensions running sky-high.

"There is always a battle between Corrie and rival BBC1 soap to see who can have the most extreme Christmas day episode and ITV producers have pulled out all the stops to bring in the most viewing figures.

"It’s a risky storyline touching on gun crime, but it breaks the mould and will have fans talking."

Another insider added: "Shona will be left fighting for survival in her coma with her family devastated at what's happened.

"It's going to be gut-wrenching."

Actress Julia recently filmed her exit scenes from the soap as she goes on maternity leave.

She is expecting her first child with husband Ben Silver.

But with Shona's life hanging in the balance, could it be a more permanent exit for her or will she live to return to the cobbles?

* Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights on ITV at 7.30pm and 8.30pm
