Emmerdale couple torn apart as Lydia Dingle struggles after horrific ordeal

Emmerdale: Lydia Dingle phones the police to report Liv

Lydia Dingle (played by Karen Blick) and Sam Dingle (Jame Hootton) are one of Emmerdale’s strongest couples, but a horrific ordeal could tear them apart.

In upcoming scenes, Craig Reed (Ben Addis) and Lydia look over where their baby’s ashes were scattered and imagine what his life would have been like if he survived.

The former lovers share a charged moment as they reflect on their grief and the next day Lydia keeps her near kiss a secret from Sam.

The following day, Lydia hands in her resignation at work but falters when Craig emphasises how much their connection has meant to him.

She ends up taking back her resignation but worries that she is making a mistake.

Craig soon reveals her true feelings for Lydia and she is left terrified when he begins to force himself on her.

After the horrific assault, she’s left in a state of shock and Craig drives a traumatised Lydia home.

She rushes inside her home and sobs in the shower as hot water runs over her.

Lydia decides to hide away the clothes she was wearing when she was raped and keeps the ordeal a secret from Sam and the rest of her loved ones.

Speaking to Express.co.uk about not reporting the rape to the police straight away, Lydia actress Karen shared: “When I was reading the scripts, I was thinking, ‘Lydia you need to do this,’ but when I’d finished reading I totally understood why she did not call the police.

“I felt a real empathy and sympathy for her behaviour because she feels guilty, she feels ashamed and she feels it is somehow her fault she’s put herself in that situation which is completely incorrect.

“Lydia is at work when this happens and she is very clear to Craig that there is nothing between them. Lydia is clear and concise and says she is married to Sam. Craig doesn’t hear any of that.”

When asked about her future with Sam, the actress explained: “She is fearful about being believed and she does not want to upset her family.

“She is thinking about others. What will this do to Sam? She just wants it to go away, [she’s thinking] ‘I am going to pretend this didn’t happen.’

“Weeks on and further down the line I can see the frustration about her thinking, ‘If only.'”

Does this mean Lydia and Sam will end up getting a divorce after it gets too difficult for her?
