Emmerdale Gabby to undergo sultry makeover as actress describes wardrobe revamp

Emmerdale star Rosie Bentham has been playing dress-up backstage in recent months, testing out new looks with the ITV wardrobe department.

The 19-year-old actress is part of a major new storyline on Emmerdale, as her character, Gabby Thomas forms an obsessive friendship with Leyla Harding.

Teenager Gabby has endured her fair share of trauma in recent months, following the abrupt exit of her mother Bernice Blackstock (Samantha Giles).

Self-sabotaging in an effort to combat her abandonment issues, Gabby resorted to anti-social behaviour and binge drinking in recent scenes.

However, her friendship with older woman Leyla (Roxy Shahidi) gives her a chance to turn her life around, when the beautician offers her a job in the salon.

Upcoming scenes will see Gabby's wardrobe transform completely, as she ditches her edgy teen uniform to mimic Leyla's signature look of tailored blazers and stiletto heels.

Opening up about her wardrobe revamp, actress Rosie said: "They've Leyla-fied me and Roxy looks me up and down and goes yep, that's Leyla.

"I was looking at her heels at the start and thinking, my goodness I can't do that! I do look at the script and think, yep that's a bit of Roxy there.

"It's fun to see her transform to that timid teenager into this woman and looking up to Leyla."

Gabby's transformation into Leyla comes from a mixture of jealousy and admiration, Rosie explained, as the older woman takes her under her wing.

The Nottingham-born actress said: "She's copying her style and the way she dresses and speaks. She looks up to her as an idol."

How will Leyla feel when she realises Gabby is following in her footsteps?

Rosie also opened up about life as a teen soap star, having replaced original actress Jemma Giles in the role of Gabby back in 2016.

Becoming a regular castmember on the soap, the young starlet has started to get noticed by soap fans in public, and has built up an impressive Instagram following of 25,700 in recent years.

Reflecting on her fame, she said: "Because I joined at such a young age, it was interesting – teenagers following me on social media and see me progress from 15 to 19 and follow my footsteps.

"It's nice to see younger people invested. "

She continued: "Emmerdale when I first joined, they were building younger cast as Katie Hill (Sarah Sugden) and Isobel Steele (Liv Flaherty) was getting bigger material and Leanna Cavanagh (Mimi Slinger) came in which was good – it got younger people watching more than before."

Urging fans to give Gabby a chance, she added: "I like it when people invest in certain characters – some people don't just neglect her because she's hard to understand!"

Emmerdale airs on weekdays at 7pm on ITV, with a second helping on Thursdays at 8pm.
