Gok Wan ‘enjoying the ageing process but craving a quiet life’ as he prepares for his 50th birthday
Life has been busy for TV presenter Gok Wan, which is why it comes as no surprise that he's looking forward to "the moment where I kind of stop."
The 49 year old fashion expert and This Morning regular exclusively told OK! that, with his 50th milestone birthday on the horizon next year, he's realising just how busy he has been with his many careers in fashion, TV presenting, being a chef, a DJ and generally running back-to-back.
He said: "Sometimes I don't give myself enough brain space to really enjoy moments because I'm just so busy, so I think when I turn 50 I'm going to have a little break. Not a massive one but just enough time to enjoy looking back, and to consider my future."
One thing's for sure though, growing old doesn't bother him. He celebrated the people who have Botox and fillers "if it makes them feel good and happy" and revealed that he's actually enjoying the ageing process.
"I mean, there are certain things I could live without – like the backache and being more tired, but I'm not dreading the big 5-0. I'm quite excited."
Gok added that turning 50 soon has him thinking about what's next, what he's going to go and what that means for him after previously talking about how London is his 'forever place' but not necessarily his 'forever home.'
"This is really on my mind at the moment. I love my home, I love where I live. My friends are all in London – it's the greatest city in the world and for me, I feel very at home.
"But there's another part of my personality which craves things a bit quieter. I've never been that person before, it's only really been in the last few years."
It's miles away from Gok's alter ego as fashion icon by day and superstar DJ by night, with the chef delighting fans at this year's Glastonbury with his dance hits. His thoughts of pinning down a place to settle are never far away though.
"I've been thinking, 'Ok, is there somewhere else that you could love?' There's definitely an adjustment to my lifestyle to come, but I don't know what it is yet."
Could we see Gok taking up farmer life in the country, or lounging by a tropical pool in the distant future?
He laughed: "I can't think of anything worse! It would definitely be another city. I love Manchester, and I love the North. I've spent a lot of time in Scotland too and I love it. The food, the climate, the people – I'm definitely drawn towards the colder climates."
Gok, who has a passion for fashion, is working with underwear brand Pour Moi on an exclusive campaign looking at fit and comfort. Continuing their Own Your Confidence theme, Gok shared some wise advice on owning how you look and feel.
"Understanding your body is amazing, it can do remarkable things. Although it's really hard not to focus on, it's really not just about your dress size. We only have one body and it's beautiful so learn to express yourself, own it and enjoy it.
"Your clothing is an art form so get the foundations right – like your underwear – and build from there. It all works hand in hand."
He added: "Underwear is the most intimate part of your wardrobe and holds against your skin. If it doesn't feel right, you wont feel good."
Pour Moi represents bodies of all shapes and sizes, keeping diversity and inclusivity at the forefront of their campaigns, something that Gok loves.
"We're talking about our bodies way more than when I first started in this world 20 years ago – it's absolutely fantastic!"
