Hollyoaks star Stephanie Waring has opened up about a battle with anorexia that left her in hospital as a teenager.
The 41-year-old actress, known to most as Cindy Cunningham on the Channel 4 soap, admitted that at the height of her eating disorder, she spent months in hospital as her weight dropped to 4st 7lbs.
Speaking about the pressure she felt aged just 14 to ‘look good in hotpants’, Stephanie was eventually shocked back to reality when the doctors got involved.
In New! Magazine this week, Stephanie explained: ‘It was bad, really bad. I weighed 4st 7lb. The doctors basically said, “If you don’t go to hospital, you may as well get hit by a bus because you’re going to die.”’
Thankfully, she was able to get the help she needed to recover – but admits that more than 30 years later, there’s still a worry about her weight.
‘I don’t think it ever leaves you especially because I was so young,’ Stephanie added. ‘I’m 41 now but it’s something so ingrained in you psychologically, so it’s always there in the back of your mind.’
Anorexia is an eating disorder in which someone believes they are overweight, and so extremely limit their calorie intake to encourage weight loss.
Not usually a conscious decision, anorexia can develop over time and can sometimes result in little to no food being eaten at all as the control over what goes in their body becomes a preoccupation.
They may or may not also have symptoms including excessive exercise in order to overcompensate and burn off any calories they may have taken.
