Im a Neighbours icon and heres why the reboot needs explosive flashback week

Neighbours legend Lucinda Cowden has revealed why the week of flashback episodes need to happen as Melanie Pearson makes an explosive return to Ramsay Street.

The fan favourite arrives back in Erinsborough to face the music next month, after weeks of fan speculation over her mysterious departure. It has so far been hinted that Mel decided to flee her marriage to Toadie Rebecchi (Ryan Moloney) after struggling to be a step-mother to his children but it's not the case.

In upcoming scenes, Melanie finds herself in a tense conversation at Number 22, the new home of her ex-husband Toadie and his new wife Terse Willis (Rebekah Elmaloglou). Unsurprisingly, Toadie and Terese are both present to hear what Melanie has to say following her extended absence.

Jane Harris, Susan Kennedy and Holly Hoyland are also in attendance to witness Melanie's revelations in spoiler pictures shared by Amazon Freeve. Paul Robinson also gets involved and appears visibly irate over the situation, but viewers will have to tune in to find out why he's there.

Speaking about her return to Neighbours during flashback week, Lucinda told Daily Star and other press: "I think it absolutely needed to happen because there's so many unanswered questions and how did we get to this place?

"I think the whole joy of going the two years ahead is that you've got this two years to mine as drama as for things that have happened and you know, the little drops of information you will have had so far in the first six weeks and then all of a sudden you get all this information that people have just not known. So I think its a fantastic device to be able to create drama and bring everyone along with us."

Melanie's return scenes will air as part of the highly-anticipated flashback week, as Neighbours provides answers over what happened during its two-year time jump. Producers have promised to provide answers over the new season's biggest mysteries and the reason for Melanie's departure is sure to feature.

Explaining what it was like filming the dramatic scenes, Lucinda explained: "They were really long days. I had so many words to remember, my brain was exploding. It was a great read so our job was bring that off the page because it was incredibly well written and it was fantastic."

The 58-year-old actress, who has played Melanie on and off since 1987, teased: "It's an incredible reveal that she's been hiding this stuff for so long. It explains who Mel is and it's great to see her stripped away and without the dresses, makeup and hair. Just to see her for this woman who's tried to protect the people who she loves and ended up with nothing."

Fans have been speculating the real reason for Melanie's disappearance as the strange excuse recently revealed seemed out of character and they don't have long to wait to find out the dark truth.
