ITV I’m A Celeb viewers brand Sam Thompson ‘best contestant ever’ as he looks set to win
After embarking on his first solo bucktucker trial, Sam Thompson smashed the latest trial to cement his place as the bookmakers' favourite to be this year's I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here jungle king – with several fans already declaring he is their “winner”.
The former Made In Chelsea star, 31, revelled in being a secret agent in a special re-run of the trial Nella Rose failed to complete earlier in the series called No Time To Cry: Cry Harder.
Arriving at the trial clearing during Thursday evening’s episode, 7 December, Sam couldn’t hide his excitement as he said: “I’ve never done one on my own, solo! I’m really nervous. There’s quite a bit of pressure. You want to get all the stars for camp. You don’t want to be solo and not bring back any.”
Host Ant McPartlin then explained: “This is No Time To Cry part two, Cry Harder. Hidden underneath us is an evil villain’s secret lair. Your job is to infiltrate the secret lair, taking on the role of a secret agent.”
Without missing a beat, Sam replied: “Yes! That’s cool!” Ant then continued: “You’ll be going down there, collecting stars hidden behind protective cases. So, you’ll need… this super high-tech secret agent watch.”
Before fellow host Declan Donnelly said: “When you’ve released a star, get it in your star bag. Only stars in your star bag at the end of the Trial will count. Each one is worth a meal for camp. You’ve got 10 minutes to try and find and collect six stars.”
Sam, who dubbed himself Agent Merf, forgot about collecting the first star and broke the beam trying to go back – a mistake he unfortunately repeated more than once while trying to secure the all important item.
When he broke the beams again he shouted: “How, how have I done this?” He then realised: “It’s the [star] bag!”
The star then told himself: “You’ve got so much time, don’t get this wrong.” Sam then faced being electrocuted and forgot the star again in that section, having to go back for it.
Next he faced green ants, and psyched himself up by telling himself: “Don’t feel the bites, it’s not about the bites, it’s about Agent Merf and making Ant and Dec proud.”
As he progressed, he suddenly fell through a trapdoor into crocodile infested waters, something that clearly shook the star and took him by surprise.
Sam exclaimed: “Oh my god, there’s a crocodile!” Before he swam through to the next section where he had to get the star from a container under water.
At the next stage of the challenge, Sam went on to enter the villain’s headquarters, which was full of snakes – something he revealed was a big fear.
Sam then exclaimed of one snake: “Oh my god, he’s looking right at me.” At the end of the trial Sam had got all six stars and army rolled out of the lair with a clear and delighted spring in his step, that even saw him compare himself to a Hollywood action hero.
Grinning from ear to ear and clearly buzzing with excitement, Sam told Ant and Dec: “That was the best thing in the entire world. It was terrifying, I hate green ants and I hate snakes and I hate cockroaches.
Before he cheekily added: “I felt like Tom Cruise a little bit.”
And it appears it wasn’t just Sam that was impressed with his performance, as viewers at home also couldn’t get enough of his infectious enthusiasm as many fans tipped him to be crowed the next King of the Jungle.
“Sam’s my winner of I’m A Celeb. I didn’t know much how him before the show started, but now I wish him nothing but good luck, he is just such a nice guy.
“People moaning about him being a ball of energy, he is making a lot of happy and smile and you can’t knock a person for that,” gushed one fan on social media.
A second fan also agreed as they added: “Sam Thompson is easily the best I’m a Celeb contestant ever. Such a good guy and such a good vibe.
“Knew he would be the favourite to win before the show even started”
Meanwhile a third viewer then weighed in as they wrote: “If Sam doesn’t win I’m A Celeb there is literally no hope for this country.”
