Kate Garraway fears she’s ‘failing’ after pulling out of GMB due to chest pains

Kate Garraway recalls Derek being stuck in passport line

Kate Garraway was forced to pull out of presenting Good Morning Britain after suffering from chest pains.

In a new interview, Kate said it took one phone call from Dr. Hilary Jones, who convinced her to go to the hospital, which meant she’d miss presenting an episode of the show back in November.

While Kate wasn’t suffering from a heart attack, doctors knew something was wrong because she wasn’t “strong enough” to have stressor tests.

Kate recalled: “When I went back, they (the doctors) said ‘Yeah, we don’t think you’re strong enough to do stressor tests’… funnily enough… I mean, oh my God, we’ve had enough stressor tests.”

The mum of two’s admission comes after discussing the struggles she has faced while caring for her husband Derek.

Derek has been poorly since March 2020 after suffering from complications from coronavirus.

At the time, Derek had to be hospitalised and placed in a coma.

He suffered from brain inflammation, kidney failure, and damage to his liver and pancreas.

He also lost eight stone and was left with holes in his lungs from repeat infections.

Kate added to the Sunday Times: “I worry that I’m failing on every front, at everything. But I’ve got to keep going and fight on for Derek.”

The ITV presenter went on to admit she feels “lonely” and has “not taken a day off” since her husband became sick.

“Caring for someone you love is a privilege, and I will never give up, but I want to champion the cause that everyone in my position faces because I know people are drowning trying to navigate through the care system,” she explained,

“We talk about a crisis but it is beyond crisis. It is very lonely and very difficult, and I at least do have that voice.”

Kate has made two documentaries detailing her family’s life as Draper battles the long-term effects of coronavirus, with both programmes winning National Television Awards in the authored documentary category.

She was also recognised with an MBE in the 2022 New Year Honours for her services to broadcasting, journalism, and charity.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
