Katya Jones, 31, and Nicola, 37, made Strictly Come Dancing history on Saturday night by being the first same-sex couple to compete in the competition. They didn’t disappoint as viewers of the BBC dance show were in awe of the two women performing together, as were the judges. However, following the performance, the professional dancer said she was slightly wary about dancing with the Olympic Boxer.

The couple took on the Quickstep to Get Happy by Ella Fitzgerald and the performance was as energetic as fans had hoped, with the pair wearing matching outfits.

After receiving appraisal from the panel, the duo then went to speak to host Claudia Winkleman, 48, about their routine.

Speaking to the boxer about her partner, the presenter said: “I know this one works you hard. You said it’s like she’s got eyes in the back of her head.”

“Yeah, she does, she doesn’t miss a trick,” Nicola replied, adding: “Even when I think she’s not looking, she’s looking.”

“You’re almost opposites as [Nicola] you say, ‘chill, relax,’ and this one [Katya] is like, ‘again,’” the host remarked.

Voting her caution over the partnership, Katya then added: “A bit too chilled for my liking,” but laughed off the comment.

The judges then went on to award the couple a combined score of 21 out of 30 as there are only three panellists this year.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer commented on the dance: “I really enjoyed that – definitely room for improvement but Nicola did a smashing job #Strictly.”

Another posted: “Guys I’m so happy. Katya Jones is a genius. One of the best choreographers that’s ever been on the show. Loved it! #Strictly.
