Dylan O’Brien is the lead in Love and Monsters, which follows his character Joel on a surprising journey. He is taken out of his bunker and above ground, facing monsters to find his love, Aimee (Jessica Henwick.) After many twists and turns, the ending shows him beginning a possible new journey.
What happens to Joel at the end of Love and Monsters?
WARNING: Spoilers for Love and Monsters ahead
At the end of Love and Monsters, Joel has a moment of intimacy with Aimee, despite her certainty they will not continue together.
At the beginning of the film, Joel vowed to find Aimee after they were separated in the midst of the apocalypse, at which point both of Joel’s parents were killed.

He vowed to find her, but seven years later, he is still in his colony underground, having not found Aimee or another mate with whom to spend his time.
The end of the film sees Joel and Aimee together, and she kisses him telling him she will find him, as he did to her years before.
She and her colony then go off into the mountains, and Joel decides to follow on after returning to his own colony and trying to encourage others not to be frightened of the monsters above the surface.
By this time Joel had gone on a massive adventure in pursuit of Aimee, despite her reluctance to his advances, and had become much braver than he was at the start.
For Joel, his loneliness was only part of his desire to reunite with Aimee, as he was also driven by his reputation in his colony of being frightened of monsters, and freezing in important moments.
As a result, his survivor friends had coupled up and gone on hunting missions together, while Joel was left alone.
He was forced to leave his colony when it was infiltrated by a giant ant, at which point he faced even more terrifying monsters above ground.
One was a toad monster, but stray dog Boy saved him and became Joel’s companion for the rest of the film.
He is later rescued again, this time by survival experts, who teach Joel a thing or two to help him survive his journey to find Aimee.
Boy helps him to become even greater than he once thought, as when his canine companion is trapped by a monster, Joel must use these survival techniques to save him.
Eventually, after getting himself into some difficult situations, he finds Aimee, who is unknowingly being infiltrated by an evil colony, which uses a monster as a predator to take supplies and land from other survivors.
Joel realises this but before he can warn Aimee, is caught by Cap (Dan Ewing), though together he and Aimee save the colony, using new techniques to commune with monsters rather than beat them.
While Aimee and Joel do not end up together, he has changed into a fighter over the course of the film, and seemingly begins a new adventure as the movie ends.
When it comes to the question of whether there will be continued adventures for Joel, director Michael Matthews told Decider: “There’s been some discussion about it. I’ve got a few interesting ideas. But we did focus on this just being its own movie.”
He added any sequel is “up to the audience,” but they did not intend to start a franchise with the movie.
Nevertheless, it may be Joel returns and his story continues – fans will have to wait and see.
