Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid were joined by Matt Hancock on Good Morning Britain to discuss the coronavirus lockdown extension expected to be announced later today by the government. The conversation also turned to testing, personal protective equipment and the rising deaths in care homes. But Hancock became visibly irritated when Morgan kept interrupting him and politely told Morgan that if he wanted an answer to his question, he had to listen and not jump in. However, this quickly turned into a sparring match between the two men.
“You’ve asked me four questions, I’d really appreciate it if you didn’t interrupt me,” Hancock remarked politely.
“Stop playing that game with me, you’re buying yourself time!” Morgan hit back.
But Hancock was stern: “I’m not going to keep answering the questions and I’d appreciate the ability to do so, that’s why I’ve come on the programme.
“I was about to answer before you interrupted me again, this is a national emergency and people want a proper response!”
“You don’t decide how I do an interview,” Morgan argued. “You do your job and I’ll do mine.”
“I’m doing my job and you keep interrupting me. If you interrupt me again I will just keep talking, thank you,” Hancock replied.
Those watching at home took to Twitter to discuss the interview which seemed to divide, one said: “I really wish @piersmorgan will let his guests speak without interrupting them. He asks multiple questions at ones and can’t grant them time to answer! Poor journalism from someone who calls himself a journalist with experience! #Amateur @GMB @ITV #GMB #GMTV.”
“#GMB @MattHancock totally owned #PiersMorgan this morning! Showed him for what he really is, control freak bully,” another added.
Someone else wrote: “I don’t have a problem with challenging politicians but the way they are trying to embarrass Matt Hancock is wrong #GMB,” while another tweet read: “Watched the @piersmorgan show as much as I could this morning but had to turn it off mid way through Matt Hancock interview. No idea why he has guests on if he doesn’t want to listen to them #GMB.”
However, others praised Morgan’s interview style.
“I’m loving @piersmorgan on #GMB interviewing Matt Hancock! Piers is exactly right not to let @MattHancock dodge questions regarding critical mistakes he has made as Health Secretary. #TeamPiers #CoronavirusLockdownUK,” a viewer wrote online.
Another added: “
