Michelle Heaton: ‘Celeb SAS is worse in real life, you had to be there to endure the pain
She's currently going through a range of gruelling challenges on-screen as part of the new Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins series, and Michelle Heaton has revealed that it's even tougher in real life than TV.
The former Liberty X star, 44, spoke exclusively to OK! this week about her stint on the show, explaining: "You only see an hour a day on TV but you had to be there to endure the actual pain and understand.
"Little things like sleep deprivation, how wet it actually is, the conditions, we got talcum powder everywhere and it ended up actually making our feet feel worse! You forget the cameras are there because it's not like you're being pulled for interviews or you have time 'off camera'."
Michelle can be seen starring alongside celebrities such as Matt Hancock, James 'Arg' Argent, Amber Turney, Gareth Gates and Danielle Lloyd.
Held over in Vietnam, it isn't for the faint-hearted and involves a number of physically challenging tasks. Michelle recalls: "There was one challenge where we went into a gas chamber which really freaked me out.
"Montana Brown and I were together and just completely panicked, you can’t breathe and it felt like I was going to erupt or die because I couldn’t breathe at all. It was wild and really shook me up."
Michelle has spent the last two years focusing on herself following a battle with addiction and is now two years sober from alcohol. She has been putting fitness first and moved to a healthy lifestyle, often sharing her gym results on social media.
Filmed ahead of her stint on Dancing On Ice at the beginning of the year, Michelle used the show as an opportunity to show her own strength, she explained that it was an endeavour which taught her acceptance and belief.
"It’s funny because I went on SAS for myself, and to prove to myself that, no matter what I've been through, and I've been through quite a lot, I can be this strong woman.
"And I think I’ve realised that I can be a strong woman without actually being perfect for SAS! The show taught me that I’m not superhuman, I am 44 and I don’t have to be good at everything to be able to be strong. I learnt acceptance and that I can do a lot of things, I was proud of myself."
She added: "It also taught me to keep my mouth shut a little! I tend to make jokes out of situations when I feel nervous or under pressure but they told me off, which I needed."
