On Monday Night, Mark Harmon said his final goodbye to CBS and his NCIS character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, after playing the role for 18 years. The emotional episode saddened tons of loyal viewers and also seemed to touch alum Ellie Bishop star Emily Wickersham as she penned a tribute to the actor.

The actress took to Instagram stories to post a screenshot of the Deadline article about Mark’s unexpected departure.

Over the top of the snap she wrote: “Big congrats to this guy,” and added, “What a run.”

The screenshot also included a photo of the longtime NCIS cast member.

As an NCIS alum, there’s no doubt Emily understood the emotions Mark was going through as she also left the series after seven seasons.

Her exit from the show was another one which left fans shocked as her character grew to become a fan-favourite.

Ellie Bishop (played by Ellie Wickersham) made her first appearance on NCIS in season 11 as a liaison officer for the crew via the National Security Agency.

She was then later promoted as the NCIS Probationary Agent, but it was her bond with NCIS Agent Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) that fans loved the most.

However, she left to begin an undercover mission, with no idea of when she would return.

While there was some speculation surrounding Gibb’s (Mark Harmon) exit, fans were surprised to see him leave four episodes into season 19.

During the episode titled Great Wide Open, Gibbs had stopped working for NCIS as there was a warrant out for his arrest.

Although it was all cleared up, NCIS Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) told Nick Torres and Jessica Knight (Katrina Law), the former Special Agent had no interest in taking his badge back.

Instead, he had rediscovered himself, this was revealed during a fishing trip when he explained to Timothy McGee (Sean Murray).

Gibbs confessed: “This sense of peace, I have not had this since Shannon and Kelly died and I’m not ready to let it go.”

Showrunner and Executive Producer, Steven D. Binder also took to Instagram to post a touching tribute to Mark.

He shared a photo of the actor on the official NCIS page and in the caption, he wrote: “As an executive producer and dear friend, Mark continues to be an integral part of the fabric of the show.

“Our north star has always been staying true to our characters, and that truth has always guided the stories we tell and where those characters go,” he continued.

“So regarding the future of Gibbs, as long-time fans of the show may have noticed over the years…never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out,” he concluded.

With the door left open for a return, fans could potentially see Gibbs make a surprise appearance soon.

While fans are devastated at Gibb’s departure, it’s fair to say the character deserved a well-earned retirement in peaceful Alaska.

NCIS season 19 continues Mondays on CBS in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
