NCIS made its debut on CBS back in 2003, a time when the team looked almost entirely different from today’s leading agents. The season premiere saw the start of former Secret Service agent Caitlin Todd (played by Sasha Alexander) leave the White House behind to join Agent Leroy Gibbs (Mark Harmon) at NCIS. Right from the get-go, it was obvious to see there was chemistry between the pair.

Were Agent Gibbs and Caitlin Todd meant to get together?

In the first-ever episode of NCIS, Yankee White, it was discovered that the President of the United States’ life was in danger when a Navy commander on board was poisoned.

This is when Gibbs and his team intervened, much to the annoyance of the Secret Service.

Gradually, Gibbs and Todd started working together to find the culprit and, by the end of the episode, the President was safe, but she was fired.

So the veteran agent decided to offer Todd a job on the spot at NCIS.

For much of the first series of NCIS, it did appear there was a flirtationship between Gibbs and Todd.

It wasn’t until the series started finding its feet that the focus became centred around Todd and Agent Tony Dinozzo (Michael Weatherly).

Her relationship changed with Gibbs, as he grew to be more of a father figure to her and the other agents, who followed in her footsteps.

But the flirting in the early days of NCIS didn’t go unnoticed by fans.

Starting up the conversation on Reddit, one fan wrote: “Rewatching the show and I noticed in the first 5 episodes, there was an attraction between Todd and Gibbs, I think the show was going that way but then they later amped the Dinozzo Todd dynamic”.

Other users then went on to agree with this idea, stating how the story arc evolved over time.

Another said: “I thought that she found Gibbs attractive (and who wouldn’t) and he knew it, but both were too professional to do anything about it.”

A third commented: “Back when only the very first season of NCIS existed many fans and TV reviewers thought the show was setting up Gibbs and Kate as romantic interests.

“The episode commentary during Yankee White even makes reference to the sexual tension between them.

“If they weren’t originally planning on going down the “Kibbs” route, they were at least considering it at the beginning.”

The creators of NCIS have never spoken openly about the possible romance between the two agents.

This could be because they wanted viewers to think of Gibbs acting more as a father to the younger agents, rather than a potential romantic interest.

As NCIS has gone on, a similar relationship has developed with himself, Agent Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), and Ellie Bishop (Emily Wickersham).

When Gibbs does return, he could have this same kind of bond with new agent Jessica Knight (Katrina Law).

Knight was introduced in series 18 after her fellow agents died in an explosion.

She joined NCIS and has proven herself to be worthy, working alongside Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) and Timothy McGee (Sean Murray).

Gibbs won’t be seen straight away, as in the season 18 finale, he pretended to be dead when his boat was blown up, in a bid to try and fool the serial killer he had been chasing.

NCIS is available to watch on CBS.
