Viewers were crushed after the tragic death of fan favourite Brenda Parra (played by Justina Machado) at the end of Queen of the South’s first season. However, even as the USA Network crime drama comes to an end this Wednesday, some critical fans still have major questions about the strange circumstances surrounding her demise.
A baffling plot hole spotted at the end of Queen of the South’s first season may have thrown the events of the entire series under scrutiny.
One fan took to Reddit with the grievance after taking issue with the recovery of the book which caused so much trouble throughout the show’s debut.
Redditor charlieyeswecan posted: “At the end of the season, Brenda is dead and supposedly didn’t give up the location to where the book was hidden.
“Not even at the thought that they would kill Tony, so she didn’t know where the book was hidden? Seems a bit like a plot hole.”
In early instalments of the series, Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga) rises through the ranks of the Vargas cartel after striking up an uneasy alliance with Camila Vargas (Veronica Falcón).
She eventually becomes a fully-fledged Queenpin in her own right, though viewers may have witnessed her downfall in the thrilling penultimate episode of season five.
However, long before that, Teresa struggled to handle her dangerous new job partnered with James Valdez (Peter Gadiot) as a drug runner for the organization.
Teresa’s eventual failure to balance her risky new career with her personal life eventually ended in the brutal killing of her best friend, Brenda.
Sadly, the blame was squarely laid on Teresa’s shoulders as she had trusted Brenda with the possession of a book containing information which could lead to the downfall of the Vargas cartel.
The book was compiled thanks to her boyfriend, Guero Davilas’ (Jon-Michael Ecker) time working with Epifaño Vargas (Joaquim de Almeida).
Using the book, Teresa and Brenda are able to use his insight to track down a ‘cleaner’ for the cartel, El Limpiador (David Labiosa), who makes people disappear for Epifaño.
Although Teresa was able to escape from El Limpiador’s men, Brenda wasn’t so lucky and was tortured and eventually killed.

This fan was baffled when they realised Brenda never gave up the location of the book, even to protect her son Tony (Adolfo Alvarez).
The same viewer conceded: “I can understand if Teresa hid the book somewhere and of course didn’t tell Brenda.”
Even so, the circumstances of the episode prior to her death make it unlikely that Brenda didn’t know the location of the book.
Another fan reasoned that Brenda may have died before having the chance to divulge Teresa’s secrets.
They commented: “We don’t know the circumstances of her death though.
“They might have tried to torture her and killed accidentally.”
Still, this is a bit of a stretch for fans to believe that El Limpiador’s men were so clumsy with their torturing techniques.
Luckily the series has stood the test of time, but some viewers are still scratching their heads when they look back at Queen of the South’s first season.
Queen of the South season 5 will conclude on Wednesday, June 9 on the USA Network.
