Kelly Anne Van Awken is set to play a major role in the next season of Queen of the South as Molly Burnett has been upped to series regular. Best known as the sometimes-partner of queenpin Teresa Mendoza, Kelly could finally become a trusted partner in the USA Network’s upcoming instalment.

Molly Burnett has played a recurring role as Kelly Anne Van Awken since the second season of Queen of the South.

As filming is set to start on the highly anticipated fifth season, Burnett is confirmed to have been promoted to series regular ahead of the next outing.

Kelly Anne has come in and out of Teresa Mendoza’s (played by Alice Braga) drug operation over the course of the series.

Her drug habit has often landed her in hot water, and it was only thanks to James Valdez (Peter Gadiot) that she was able to escape after being discovered as a mole in season three.

Lately, Kelly Anne has cleaned up her act and was last seen in season four achieving sobriety and being tentatively welcomed back by her former boss, Teresa.

As Teresa expanded her operation to New Orleans last year, the pair could form a stronger partnership against new rival Judge Lafayette (David Andrews) in the next season.

However, as James’ arrival in the thrilling finale possibly signals the return of Camila Vargas (Veronica Falcón), there’s still a chance their relationship could once again disintegrate.

Previously, Molly Burnett was best known as Melanie Jonas in NBC’s long-running soap opera Days Of Our Lives.

After departing the series in 2016, the star has taken on a remarkably different role in the last three seasons of Queen of the South.

Since her introduction to the cartel drama, Burnett has become a firm fan favourite, and the show’s audience are excited to welcome back for an extended role in season five.

The star has also been taking to Instagram to tease the upcoming fifth season and promising big things in the pipeline for Kelly Anne.

Burnett’s Instagram posts and stories have also been keeping fans up-to-date with the show’s progress as filming was shut down amid the outbreak of coronavirus.

Teresa star Alice Braga also commented on the show’s schedule, confirming filming was set to resume over the next two weeks.

Meanwhile, once Burnett’s promotion was announced, the star once again posted to social media to celebrate the news.

Screencapping Deadline in a new Instagram post, she wrote: “10 year old Molly would be speechless. Honestly this is so freakin amazing, and I’m eternally grateful.”

Thanking the show’s producers, she then added: “And our world class fans, y’all are just the best, and we can’t wait to give you an amazon season 5.”

Her fellow cast members congratulated her, including lead star Alice Braga who simply commented: “YEAH BABY.”

New showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez took the helm in season four, and reactions from certain fans were mixed compared to previous outings.

With the return of James, a larger role for fan favourite Kelly Anne and potentially even more familiar faces in the mix, Queen of the South’s fifth season is set to be an exciting return to form.

Queen of the South season 4 is available to stream on Netflix.
