Stephen Mulhern ‘forever thankful’ as he pays tribute to popular axed channel

Presenter Stephen Mulhern is one of the many celebrities who have paid tribute to CITV after its axing.

First launching back in 1983 as an afternoon segment on ITV, it went on to have its own channel in 2006 and was home to a series of popular shows.

From Art Attack, Finger Tips, My Parents are Aliens, Saturday Showdown and Horrid Henry, CITV helped launch the careers of many well-known presenters.

With it officially coming to a close on September 1, many stars have been paying tribute to the channel as they say their goodbyes.

One of which included Mulhern, who has featured on Finger Tips and Tricky TV, kick-starting his career.

Taking to Twitter, the star retweeted a series of images ITV had shared which highlighted the “end of an era.”

He wrote: “Hello all, CITV started my career in TV, it was an incredibly special time learning the craft of how to present live TV.

‘I will forever be thankful for every opportunity it has delivered. Great people, great shows and great times x.”

However, it wasn’t just Stephen who was moved by CITV coming to an end as A Place in the Sun’s Leah Charles-King followed suit.

She wrote: “Goodbye #CITV! The end of an era. You launched my TV career almost 25 years ago, like many who came before and after me.

“You were my chosen kids channel growing up & it was a dream to become a @ChildrensITV presenter & part of your legacy. You’ll be missed. #CITVFarewell.”

Following CITV being axed, the broadcaster has since launched ITVX Kids in its place.

Speaking about the decision to axe the channel, ITV told Sky News it comes down to the way people are now accessing content.

ITVX’s managing editor Craig Morris said: “We’re really excited to launch this dedicated destination for kids on ITVX, which will be home to a wealth of content.

“Including new series, recognisable brands and existing favourites for a range of ages, all in one child-safe area, with editorial curation to guide viewing.

“The wealth of content will be available to stream for free, with the option for parents to choose ad-free viewing, through a subscription to ITVX Premium.
