Strictly star reveals tear-jerking tribute to their single mum in this weekends show

Strictly Come Dancing star Nikita Kanda has shared the emotional dedication behind her Single Ladies dance for this weekend's live show.

The BBC Asian Network Breakfast Show host appeared on Wednesday's episode of spin-off show Strictly: It Takes Two, where she opened up on how her performance will be a tribute to her mum, a single parent.

Nikita, 28, sat alongside her dance partner Gorka Marquez as she told of the special personal significance to her for this Saturday's performance and talked about her respect for the job her mum had done bringing up her and her sister as a single parent.

She and Gorka are set to dance a Charleston to Beyonce's hit tune Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) this weekend, but while the dance style is known for being fun, there is an emotional meaning behind it for Nikita. 

She told It Takes Two viewers: "I am dedicating this one to my mum. She is the single woman in my life. She brought me and my sister up on her own.

"So, this one is going out to all the single parents out there that have done everything for their kids. I feel like this is the perfect tribute to my mum."

Nikita also paid tribute to her Strictly partner, professional dancer Gorka, who has recently welcomed his second child with Gemma Atkinson after meeting her on the 2017 series of the show.

Nikita said of their partnership on this year's BBC One contest: "I am so glad that I have got Gorka. He has got so much patience with me. I feel like I am his third child. He has got another kid now."

After the announcement that she had been paired with Gorka, Nikita had told her Instagram followers: "TEAM GORKITA!!!! I’m literally having the best time and so many laughs with @gorka_marquez I couldn’t wish for a better partner to be on this journey with."

The radio star has spoken about being new to dancing and the challenge ahead of her, but after her week one performance, she proudly posted pictures from their debut Waltz to Instagram.

Nikita wrote: "OMG WEEK 1 DONE still can’t believe I’ve danced live on the tele! What an experience. This is the most overwhelming, exposing, out of my comfort zone thing that I’ve ever done but I’m loving every minute with @gorka_marquez thank you for being so kind & patient with me especially with my nerves last night. Roll on week 2."

Supportive Gorka commented on her post: "You did your self proud! It’s my pleasure partner! Can’t wait for next week laughs."
