Strictly Come Dancing star Hamza Yassin almost destroyed the set while preparing for his routine on Saturday. Helen Skelton revealed the lucky escape ahead of the show’s exciting return to Blackpool Tower ballroom.

Helen lifted the lid on what goes on behind the scenes during the BBC show’s rehearsals.

She told Claudia Winkleman on her Radio 2 show: “Hamza nearly broke the set though,” to the intrigued presenter who asked how he did it.

The Countryfile presenter continued: “Hamza and I are both similar in that we don’t find shaking our bits and being sassy and sexy that easy.

“So we were practising and Hamza was showing me how one should move up and down a piece of furniture and he did it against the set and the set is not nailed to the floor and it’s not load bearing.”

Claudia screamed in shock at the thought of the potential disaster before Hamza stepped in.

He remarked: “The whole elevator just moved across the stage and you could see people looking and saying ‘What was that?’ I was like ‘nothing!'”

The presenter added: “Nothing to see here and you immediately blame someone else.”

Helen joked how Hamza shifted the blame by exclaiming: “Yes, me!”

The popular wildlife presenter has already defended himself on the potential mishaps that happen with his partner Jowita Przystal this week.

Speaking on her Instagram feed, one fan asked whether his long hair often gets in her face during their performances.

Jowita jokingly replied to the fan: “The answer is they never do unless he does it on purpose.”

Hamza added: “Bare in mind I’ve had this hair for 17 years so I know what I’m doing, I know where it is.

“There you go! I’m used to it. I know where it is, how long it is.

This week Hamza and Helen will perform at the home of ballroom dancing in Blackpool Tower.

Having impressed judges and viewers alike, Hamza has won the hearts of viewers with eye-catching displays like his Couple’s Choice to Jerusalema last week.

However, despite his stunning routines he could be the next celebrity to be eliminated from the competition.

According to Digital Marketing Agency Mediaworks, the positive reaction to him on social media has dipped in recent weeks.

Kym Marsh is at the bottom of the sentiment graph, with Hamza not far behind in second place alongside comedian Ellie Taylor.

Hamza has yet to feature in the dreaded dance-off, but with Tony Adams now out of the running for the Glitterball Trophy, the next couple to leave is harder than ever to predict.

This week Hamza and Jowita will dance the American Smooth to the theme From New York, New York by Frank Sinatra.

Strictly Come Dancing airs tonight at 7.45pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
