Strictly Come Dancing star Tom Fletcher has revealed he and fellow contestant AJ Odudu broke strict show rules by telling each other that they’d signed up to the BBC show.

McFly singer Tom explained that the pair let the secret slip after their mutual friend, TV presenter Emma Willis, failed to hold in the exciting news that both of her pals were taking to the dance floor.

Joking that her and AJ had ripped up the Strictly rule book where contestants can’t tell anyone that they’re taking part, Tom, 36, confessed: “Me and AJ told each other because Emma Willis is our mutual friend.”

The dad-of-three continued: “I think it was Emma that told me, and I think Emma that told her, so blame Emma Willis!”

He added: “Me and AJ were sat next to each other for about an hour and neither of us had said anything, but I think we both knew that we both knew.”

Tom went on to say that it was a bit of a no-brainer to sign up to the show – especially after watching his McFly bandmate Harry Judd lift the glitter ball trophy back in 2011.

He revealed: “Secretly, somewhere deep down, I’ve wanted to do it since my bandmate Harry [Judd] did it ten years ago.”

He continued: “But life gets in the way and this year just felt right. I felt like it was time.”

And the star admitted that although he thinks Harry’s victory has added a tiny bit of pressure, he’s not going to worry about it.

Tom explained: “Strictly’s been a part of McFly’s life and our history – it was an amazing time for our band when he won.”

He continued: “So it had been his thing for a while, so I did feel like there was a little bit of pressure for me to go far.”

“But after ten years, I just want to have a fun experience. You only get to do Strictly once, so I want to have the best time and not worry about Harry Judd.”

And it’s not just viewers at home who are looking forward to Tom showing off his move, as he revealed his eldest son Buzz is a “huge fan” of the show.

Explaining that he’s “really invested” in the competition, Tom said: When Chris Ramsay was in it a couple of years ago, he cried his eyes out when he got voted out”

“So seeing him really get into it, when they asked if I’d do it, I thought, “my son would love that!”
