Ted Lasso begins airing on Apple TV+ on Friday, August 14 as a new comedy series which sees a clueless American coach land the role as the head of a Premier League team. The series features an all-star cast, including comedy legend Jason Sudeikis in the titular role. Here’s everything viewers need to know about the cast of characters, including some exclusive insight from the stars themselves.

Ted Lasso – Jason Sudeikis

Sudeikis plays the lead role of Ted Lasso in the new comedy who is a manager hired by a struggling club in the Premier League.

Very quickly it becomes clear he knows very little about football, which is something Sudeikis revealed he does relate to a bit.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, he said: “Since doing the commercials and certainly since doing the series, I’ve become a bigger and bigger fan of the sport.

“When you get to sit in Wembley or at Arsenal’s home stadium or Crystal Palace, it’s impossible not to be excited.”

As fans will know, Sudeikis is an American actor and comedian who started out his career in Saturday Night Live and has since appeared in films like We’re The Millers, Horrible Bosses and Hall Pass.

Coach Beard – Brendan Hunt

The show’s co-creator is Brendan Hunt who also plays Lasso’s second-in-command Coach Beard.

Hunt is a long-time collaborator of Sudeikis’ and has also starred in We’re The Millers and Horrible Bosses 2.

The star himself is a big fan of football, revealing to Express.co.uk: “I was not a football fan as a kid but I’ve become one as an adult after spending a little time in Amsterdam.

“So I was quite delighted to be able to have real walking, talking fantasy football to walk into every day.”

Rebecca – Hannah Waddingham

Hannah Waddingham plays the owner of the club Rebecca who drafts in Lasso as her new manager.

Speaking about her role, Waddingham told Express.co.uk: “Rebecca is a prime example of people seeing one thing that she very much chooses to present and then some.

“And [then there’s] the real inside, which seemingly only Ted starts to see.”

Viewers are likely to recognise Waddingham from her role as Jackson’s mum in Sex Education as well as her role in Game of Thrones.

Speaking about his role, Swift said: “Higgins is a confounded character who is in between a rock and a hard place.

“He used to work for Rebecca’s ex-husband and he used to have to do some dodgy stuff for him, which Rebecca uses against him.”

Nathan – Nick Mohammed

Nick Mohammed plays amiable worker Nathan in the comedy series who makes fast friends with Lasso.

Comedian Mohammed is well known for his hilarious performances, including recently creating and starring in Intelligence with David Schwimmer.

Jamie Tartt – Phil Dunster

Phil Dunster plays one of Richmond FC’s star footballers, Jamie Tartt.

Aside from Ted Lasso, Dunster is known from roles in Strike Back, Humans and The Trouble with Maggie Cole.

Roy Kent – Brett Goldstein

Brett Goldstein is football player Roy Kent who is none too pleased when Lasso is hired.

Comedy writer and actor Goldstein is the writer of upcoming AMC series Soulmates as well as being the host of the Films to be Buried With podcast.

Keeley Jones – Juno Temple
