The Handmaid’s Tale has seen a number of characters go through rough spots over the course of the past three seasons.
Serena Joy (played by Yvonne Strahovski) may have one of the most harrowing stories, as she has been forced to sit by and watch her husband Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) do unspeakable things.
Season three of the Hulu show has seen Serena take a more hands-on approach to her life, as she has claimed a lot more responsibility and independence over her reign.
However, throughout this season she has also had a number of chances to escape the dictatorship almost unseen – but she hasn’t.
Whilst Serena has alluded to her desire to get away from the horrific place once or twice, she has always opted to stick around alongside her husband.
As the season draws to a close, fans of the show have been mulling this decision over, and believe they have worked out exactly why Serena simply won’t leave Gilead.
Reddit-User Voice_Of_Season recently wrote on the website: “The biggest reason why Serena does not leave Gilead (despite being given several opportunities) is because as much as she hates being limited. She loves belonging to the elite class.”
Serena has always been ambitious throughout her life, and started her journey campaigning for women, and the rights of children.
However the one key factor of her life which has never changed has been her class – she has always been surrounded in luxury.
Whether it has been large houses or constant service, Serena has always enjoyed the finer things in life.

She loves belonging to the elite class

Another user, guambatwombat, agreed, adding: “I think that’s definitely true. She likes the luxury, esteem, and respect she gets.
“She’s never shown any sign of being uncomfortable ordering her literal house slaves around.
“Just another bullet on the ‘why Serena is a bad person, no matter how much humanizing we see’ list.”
Meanwhile, other fans of the show have been theorising that Serena is planning a secret getaway from Fred and his dictatorship.
Reddit-user 321equinox inquired: “What if Serena is only pretending to follow Fred, and pretending she wants the baby back?
“But she is actually still planning to work with June to take down Gilead and/or free both of them, Nicole and Hannah?”
The user then went on to explain why she would entertain speaking to June through this guise.
They added: “She can’t let June in on it and risk being overheard with all the attention on them.
“If they were to make a getaway, as Nicole’s mother, she could go anywhere she wants with her child and ‘her handmaid’ (to all outward appearances). I realise it seems she is keeping the peace with June to keep up appearances.”
The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 continues 9pm Wednesdays on Hulu on Wednesdays and Sundays on Channel 4.
