The Seer

The Seer of Kattegat was a mystical creature with supernatural powers, who could communicate with the Gods.

Most importantly, they could answer questions about the warrior’s future and their fate in life.

Unfortunately, not much was known about The Seer’s background, other than he was thought to be hundreds of years old.

The Seer was one of the most respected beings in Kattegat, often enjoying a status higher than the King itself.

In season four, he shared the prophecy that Ragnar’s (played by Travis Fimmel) former wife, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), would be killed by one of Ragnar’s son.

Lagertha was ultimately killed by Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø), who accidentally stabbed her to death in season six.

The Seer was brutally killed by Ivar the Boneless (Alex Hogh Andersen) in season five of Vikings.

As the self-appointed King of Kattegat, Ivar visited The Seer to hear his prophecy.

However, when the prophecy was not exactly what Ivar wanted to hear, he killed The Seer.

Speaking to Variety about The Seer’s death, show creator Michael Hirst reflected on Kavanagh’s performance as The Seer.

He said: “I had worked with John before: he was a great Roman-Catholic bishop in The Tudors, with an absolutely wonderful voice — a great stage actor, by the way.

“So, he was the perfect Seer because you don’t really see his face; it’s his voice you recognize more than anything else, so I wanted John.

“It was established as a convention early on that with all the other actors I discuss their roles and motivations, but I didn’t need to do that with John.

“His role is just prescribed. He’s The Seer. He’s the voice. He’s, as I say, the conscious of the tribe.”

Pope Leo IV

Pope Leo IV was the Pope and head of Christianity when young Alfred (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) visited Rome on a pilgrimage.

He appeared only in season four of Vikings when Aethelwulf (Moe Dunford), Alfred and Prudentius visited Rome.

During the visit, Pope Leo gifted Alfred with a sword, and crowned Alfred a consul of Rome, just like Caesar.

Pope Leo IV is based on the real Leo IV, who was Bishop of Rome from 847 until 855.
