EASTENDERS beauty Maisie Smith has signed to compete on Strictly Come Dancing, which launches TONIGHT (October 17) on BBC One.
The star is well known for role on the soap, but lately has come under fire from BBC bosses.
Who is Maisie Smith?
Maisie is a 19-year-old actress.
She lives in Westcliff-on-Sea with her parents and sister Scarlett.
She is most famous for her role in EastEnders but also appeared in 2008 film The Other Boleyn Girl.
Maisie is also a singer and released her first single "Good Thing" back in 2016.
In an emotional self-penned song posted on her Instagram, Maisie opened up about her body image struggles.
She sang: "When I was little I would look in the mirror, holding in my stomach wishing that I was thinner.
"Guess I had a case of body dysmorphia – and I still haven't shaken it off."
"Things were getting heavy, that's what the scales told me.
"Only 13 years old, wiping the tears of my cheeks, it felt like no-one else around me really understood."
In addition to singing, Maisie also regularly impresses followers with her other hobbies – including painting, working out, and dancing.
Maisie took part in the Children In Need special of Strictly Come Dancing last year, and came first with pro dancer Kevin Clifton.
Who does she play in EastEnders?
Maisie shot to fame aged seven after securing the role of Tiffany Butcher on the BBC One soap.
Maisie played Tiffany Butcher in Eastenders from 2008 to 2014.
She rejoined the Albert Square crew full-time in 2018 after an absence of four years.
In 2009, Smith was award Best Dramatic Performance from a Young Actor or Actress at The British Soap Awards.
Why did she face the axe from the BBC?
According to reports, in August Maisie was being investigated about the content she has been uploading to social media app TikTok.
Beeb bosses feared that some of her videos breached the rules of her BBC contract.
Maisie has 1.7 million followers on the platform, and her fan base on the app continues to grow.
Maisie allegedly had been offered a huge sum by a record label to post artists’ tracks over clips of her online videos.
She had previously asked soap chiefs if she could accept a similar deal but was told “No” due to clauses in her contract which says stars are not allowed to promote other brands on social media.
Despite this, she went ahead the second time.
A sourcesaid: 'It is unthinkable that Strictly would sign her after the few weeks she has had. The show is the pinnacle of the BBC and gives rising stars and established ones a huge step to more fame.
'So it’s very weird to give someone whose future was very unclear just weeks ago such an opportunity. Perhaps they see it as a way of nailing down a rising star rather than her leaving and taking with her a young audience.'
Maisie also attracted criticism after being spotted smoking a spliff in her car.
