Coronation Street star Shelley King has become a key character on the cobbles since she joined as Yasmeen Metcalfe in 2014.

The believed character is currently in a relationship with Stu Carpenter played by Bill Fellows and will soon be celebrating her 70th birthday in the heart of Weatherfield.

Away from Corrie, the soap star is miles away from her on screen persona and is actually 67 years old and is in a civil partnership with actor and director Trilby James.

Trilby has established herself in the world of showbiz having worked on shows such as Poirot, Little Lord Fauntleroy, Casualty, The Broker's Man and Cake.

The pair have been together for over 20 years with Shelley "coming out" to her parents after they met.

Shelley who originally hails from Calcutta, India reflected back on the time she came out to her parents when she was 42.

The TV star shared that the lack of lesbian representation in the media prompted her to express who she really was.

She told the Metro in 2021: "I met Trilby, 24 years ago. She had never had a relationship with a woman and it was so difficult for both of us. But almost instantly we had an inexorable attraction. We are soulmates. It’s as if there is an umbilical cord between us.

"It’s not always plain sailing, but the ship will never break. We talk to each other about everything and work problems out together, however difficult. After we got together, I ‘came out’ to my parents aged 42. They were not in the least surprised."

Earlier this year, Shelley also revealed that she was tested for autism following concerns about her anxieties.

While on Kaye Adams' podcast, How to be 60 she said: "I think growing older has made me realise I’ve become more like my mother in that she would get very anxious.

She continued: "My noticing that my anxieties are becoming more like my mother’s, I have decided that I am going to try and get a diagnosis for autism. I noticed myself becoming quite unreasonable about things. I didn’t like crowds and I didn’t want to go out.

"I’m very pedantic and I like to plan things, and I just wanted a diagnosis. Today, I’ve just been for the first part of my diagnosis. I even found that first part quite helpful. I’m noticing more things about me and I don’t want them to overwhelm me in the way they overwhelmed [my mother]."

The Corrie star went on to share that her partner's brother suffers from autism and credited Trilby for her support.

Shelley said: "I’ve learnt a lot more about myself as she has helped me to become more tolerant and to like myself more."
