Krishnan Guru-Murthys doctor cant guarantee he wont drop dead on Strictly

Krishnan Guru-Murthy has revealed that his doctor can't guarantee he 'won't drop dead on Strictly' due to his genetic heart condition.

The 53 year old journalist and Channel 4 newsreader is one of the celebrities who will be putting on their dancing shoes for this year's Strictly Come Dancing, which is due to start in September.

Krishnan suffers from the heart condition hypertrophic cardiomyopathy which has caused the death of two of his cousins.

But despite that, Krishnan explained that he felt that he needed to do the show sooner rather than later, for fear of being "too "decrepit" to do it later in life.

Krishnan has the full support of his wife as he tries something new by going on Strictly this year, where he will be joined by other celebs such as former Love Island star, Zara McDermott, and EastEnders' Bobby Brazier.

Speaking about going on Strictly with his heart condition, Krishnan told The Guardian: “I even asked my cardiologist if I might drop dead live on BBC1. ‘No’, was his answer. But he couldn’t give me an absolute guarantee. I have to be careful of raising my heartbeat into the red zone; that final 15%. I shouldn’t go there. It’s where people with my condition drop dead.”

The genetic disease thickens the muscle walls of the heart and, in some cases, can lead to cardiac arrest.

Krishnan was the fourth celebrity announced for this year's Strictly, which is aired on BBC.

The exciting news was announced in early August by Strictly co-host Claudia Winkleman on her BBC Radio 2 show.

Krishnan – best known as the main anchor of Channel 4 News, as well as hosting live debates for Channel 4 during elections – admitted he's "surprised, delighted and slightly confused" to find himself taking part "on the basis of 'you only live once!'".

"I can’t wait to start learning to dance," he added. "But I am slightly worried about my general decrepitude," Krishnan told fans of the much-loved dance competition."

Other celebrities taking part in this year's show are comedian Les Dennis, actor Nigel Harman, tennis pro Anna Croft, Paralympic cyclist Jody Cundy, Corrie actress Ellie Leach, actor Adam Thomas, BBC Asian Network’s Breakfast Show host Nikita Kanda, TV star Angela Scanlol, Comedian Eddie Kadi, actor Layton Williams, actress Amanda Abbington, and broadcaster Angela Rippon.
