Liz Taylor dress earns old friend £250,000

The actress wore the Christian Dior gown at the 1961 Oscars when she won Best Actress award for Butterfly 8.

She kept it along with hundreds of other dresses made for her.

By 1971, she was fed-up with hauling her huge wardrobe of 40 suitcases on her travels and told Anne Sanz, the wife of her chauffeur Gaston, to help herself.

She filled two suitcases with the star’s glamorous outfits from her wardrobe at the Dorchester Hotel in London.

They remained largely untouched in the suitcases for 52 years. When auctioneer Kerry Taylor was called out to value some of the outfits she was shocked to find the Dior gown. It was bought by an international fashion museum.

Anne, in her 80s, was in the auction room in London. Kerry said: “It was a Hollywood ending to the sale. Anne was very emotional. There were tears.”
