Make or break – Meghans new career plan branded as so unsafe
As rumours circulate that the Duchess of Sussex is about to embark on a political career, an expert has told new that it’s a seriously ambitious move that could mean make or break for her relationship with Prince Harry.
After the death of 90-year-old Californian Democrat senator Dianne Feinstein at the end of September, Meghan’s name was being thrown into the ring by commentators as a potential replacement for her.
However, despite the fact that Meghan, 42, reportedly had a Zoom call with California governor Gavin Newsom to discuss the position, in the end it was filled by the former advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris, Laphonza Butler, 44.
While this may not have been Meghan’s moment to make a political move, it’s thought that the former actress and humanitarian activist, who has campaigned in the past for US gender equality and paid family leave, could be interested in pursuing future opportunities in this area.
Entertainment expert Mark Boardman has told new that if the duchess were to move into this world, the flip side of such a “positive career progression” would be that it would have a “significant impact” on her relationship with her family.
Mark said, “The Sussexes have a very strong relationship with the Kennedys and some powerful names such as Oprah Winfrey. If Meghan were to enter politics, it would be as a young senator, which could be seen as a positive career progression as it would allow leverage in her status, connections, and political influence.
"But it would also have a significant impact on her and would affect her relationship with everyone in her immediate family.”
Mark continued that even someone as capable and well-connected as Meghan might struggle to adapt to life in the political arena. He explained, “Transitioning from a high-profile actress and member of the royal family might prove challenging. Meghan would need to adapt to a whole new set of responsibilities and expectations. She’s known for her creativity and assertiveness, and I believe she might struggle.”
Aside from the steep learning curve she’d encounter, Mark noted that the one relationship that could suffer most is with the Duke of Sussex, 39.
He said, “The most significant strain would likely be on her marriage to Harry. The constant media attention and demanding work hours would be unlike anything Meghan has experienced in some time.“
He added, “Realistically, she would have to work twice as hard to establish credibility, which takes time. This could impact her relationships, especially if her political views clash with the Senate or indeed Harry’s own values.
“Public scrutiny would force her to make decisions based on public perception, potentially straining her relationship with fellow senators and Harry, who needs to spend more quality time with her, especially considering their family responsibilities.”
Meghan, mum to Archie, four, and Lilibet, two, would also potentially be away from home a lot in such a role, and like any working parent, this could be difficult to manage.
Former president Barack Obama famously regretted that his political life interrupted time he could have spent with daughters Malia, now 25, and Sasha, 22.
“Not a day went by that I didn’t wish I could spend more time with the family I love more than anything else in the world,” he said.
And Mark warned, “For Meghan to balance that with any political ambitions would be a delicate challenge. Harry wants to work on his own projects, and he’s away a lot and she has to think of the children as well. If Meghan worked in politics she could be based anywhere, flying all over the US and being away for days at a time.”
He also predicts a clash of interests because of the Sussexes’ royal connections.
“There’s a royal code that says you don’t comment on politics and you shouldn’t put anyone in a bad light. Meghan would be going against nearly every single royal code of conduct and could cause major security issues, so Harry could steer her away from it. It’s so unsafe. Meghan is very outspoken and strong-willed and that could upset a lot of people.”
He added, “Overall, I think it could drive Harry and Meghan apart – he knows full well that [when] you go into politics you don’t dip one foot in the bath – you are going knee deep. And there’s no real coming back from that.
“It could cause so many conflicting work arrangements and potentially a loss of deals for Harry and for them as a couple. Meghan’s potential political career could have profound consequences on their lives if she decides to give her wholehearted commitment.”
