Rio Ferdinand’s wife reduced to tears as newborn suffers health complications
Kate Ferdinand shares newborn health scare
Rio Ferdinand’s wife Kate was reduced to tears after the couple’s baby girl, Shae, was struck down with congenital pneumonia and taken away to be whisked to a special care unit.
Congenital pneumonia is often caused by an infection in the foetal fluid and can be life-threatening for a minority of babies, or cause scarring on the lungs.
The courageous couple have now released video footage from the hospital on Instagram sharing their ordeal, and they’ve been inundated by support from others who’ve suffered birth complications as well.
Kate, 32, is seen fretting in her hospital bed after apparently having a mother’s intuition that something wasn’t quite right.
“I could just tell, I thought there was something wrong and [my baby] wasn’t taking in the right amount of oxygen, so she’s gone to the special care unit,” she lamented.

Heartbreakingly, she added: “I’m being really strong, but if I talk about it, I’ll cry, because I just want her here now.”
Rio also spoke out while by her side at the hospital during the July birth, exclaiming: “You don’t ever think about negatives, you don’t think about what can go wrong, you don’t ever come into the hospital thinking that your first night is gonna be your baby alone on another ward.
“The kids are saying: ‘Where’s the pictures? Send us the pictures’ [and] they’re all excited,” he added, his eyes widening with sadness.
“You don’t wanna send the first picture of the baby with all the wires,” Rio agonised, as the camera switched to a close-up shot of baby Shae hooked up to hospital equipment.

Congenital pneumonia can make the first 24 hours of a baby’s life hell, due to the respiratory distress that it causes.
However, Kate shared on Instagram that, after receiving numerous messages of encouragement, she’d “finally plucked up the courage” to share her previously untold birth story, featuring “our special girl Shae”.
She already shares a two-year-old son, Cree, with 44-year-old Rio, while she is step-mum to his three kids, Lorenz, Tate and Tia, after his wife died of breast cancer in 2015.
This isn’t the first tragedy Kate has experienced with Rio, as she revealed back in 2022 that she’d had a miscarriage.
The baby was revealed to have had “no heartbeat” when she underwent her 12-week scan.
At the time, she lamented: “So much to say, but somehow I can’t find the words. Absolutely devastated & heartbroken.”
However, she added: “Couldn’t be more grateful for the hugs I got from my big(er) babies coming through the door when we arrived home.”
