Former teammates, Hollywood stars and more honor former Red Sox pitcher dead at 57

_

Boston Red Sox legend Tim Wakefield — who in 2004 helped the team win its first championship in 86 years — passed away on Oct. 1. He was 57 years old.

Although the team announced days earlier that the 200-win pitcher had an illness, Tim’s former teammate Curt Schilling revealed — without consent — that the knuckleballer had brain cancer.

Tim was one of the only modern-day players to use a knuckleball, a pitch of a bygone era, almost exclusively. While his accomplishments were well-documented on the field, he was perhaps more beloved off the field, as he won the Roberto Clemente Award for sportsmanship and community involvement in 2010. ESPN reported that Tim was the Red Sox’s nominee for the award eight times, as he often visited sick children at Boston-area hospitals and raised funds for the Jimmy Fund, which works to combat childhood cancer.

After his death, many of Tim’s former teammates (and even some Hollywood celebrities) publicly reacted to the news.

“Wake exemplifies what this uniform is, and it’s not just the name on the back, it’s the name on the front. He exemplifies what it means to be a Red Sox and what it means to be a professional.” —Jason Varitek via NESN

“I loved the anticipation of a Tim Wakefield start. The feeling that if his knuckleball was dancing, batters would look foolish and if it wasn’t, Wake would look as human as the rest of us. What a gift that he pitched for the Red Sox. What a joy that he won 200 games. What a relief that he got the WS rings he deserved. I was lucky enough to cross paths with him a few times over the years and, unlike his knuckleball, you always knew what you were going to get — a kind and big-hearted man. RIP” —Seth Meyers
