Prime Video Releases Official Documentary Trailer for 'Maxine's Baby: The Tyler Perry Story'
Tyler Perry is officially telling his story. Those who may think they know about Perry’s rise to Hollywood from being a homeless playwright to becoming the billionaire media mogul, will be faced with a captivating story for his upcoming Amazon Prime Video documentary, Maxine’s Bay: The Tyler Perry Story.
Directed by Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz, the documentary sets to paint Perry’s “tender, intimate portrait,” with the title giving a nod to his late mother Willie Maxine Perry, who died in 2009 and was the source of much of Perry’s professional inspiration. The trailer details Perry’s rule-breaking climb to becoming one of Hollywood’s most prolific filmmakers. From discussing his abusive upbringing and his estranged relationship with his father, through to his adulthood and watching his mother “slowly dying” all while building an empire, Perry’s journey is meticulously documented in the film.
A narrator voices in the trailer, “He had some horrific experiences that ultimately led to the characters he created and the imagination that he had.” One of Perry’s friends shared a memory about how the two were so broek once that they had shared burgers over discussion Perry’s “great dreams.” Another voice adds,”A studio executive said to him: ‘Black people don’t go to the movies.’ They were just wrong on every count when it came to Tyler.” Perry is heard saying, “All these people told me what I would never be. Nobody had said what I could be. What I will not do is change because some critics think it’s not art.” Oprah warns, “Do not play him small,” while Gayle King states, “There was no denying the talent and the power of Tyler Perry.”
Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story releases on Prime Video on November 17.
