With winter in full swing, it might feel like your hair is drier than ever before and could suffer damage during a particularly chilly day. 

Luckily, there are a few easy fixes to guarantee your tresses won’t break and snap in the cold temperatures. 

Celebrity hairstylists and beauty experts told FEMAIL their top tips for protecting your hair in the bitter winter weather. 

Here’s how to prevent hair damage and guarantee your locks don’t suffer from the cold anymore than they have to.

Rejuvenate your locks with hydrating products 

It’s time to invest in hydrating products that will bring that much-needed shine back to your hair. 

Hair-raising facts! Here’s what to avoid this winter, according to celeb stylists

  • Don’t over-wash your hair, instead wash once or twice a week
  • Don’t go directly outside with wet hair 
  • Don’t overuse heat, like hair straighteners or blow dryers 
  • Don’t blowdry your hair without using a heat protectant 
  • Don’t skimp on hair masks, and make sure you’re using one once a week 

 

Los Angeles and New York-based superstar stylist Dimitris Giannetos, who’s behind the legendary locks of Amal Clooney, Ciara, Megan Fox, Gigi Hadid and more, told FEMAIL, ‘During the winter, the best products that I use on clients are hair oils,’ because ‘they provide an amazing amount of hydration to the hair while taming frizz.’ 

Dimitris called Garnier Hair Filler + Hyaluronic Moisture Repair Serum ($9.99) ‘a must-have for the winter months,’ because ‘it helps strengthen the hair and adds the perfect amount of moisture boost to the strands to avoid brittle ends.’

New York City-based celebrity hairstylist Orlando Pita, who has worked with Anne Hathaway, Selena Gomez, Julianne Moore, Jacob Elordi, and more, told FEMAIL, ‘Moisture is the key to having healthy hair especially during the cold months.’ 

‘The harsh, extreme cold tends to be particularly drying on hair, and that’s where the benefits of a quality Argan Oil come into play,’ he said, suggesting his own brand’s Argan Rejuvenating Hair Treatment Oil ($24.99), a leave-in treatment specially designed for extremely dry, frizzy hair. 

‘Winter also brings challenges from indoor environments, where heat is everywhere and can contribute to dryness, brittleness, and static electricity,’ Orlando warned. 

Los Angeles-based celebrity hairstylist Ray Christopher, who works with Lori Harvey, Tiffany Haddish, and Quinta Brunson advised, ‘Keeping your hair moisturized and full of nutrients in the wintertime is just as important as the summertime.’ 

Ray’s go-to products to protect his celebrity client’s hair include Garnier Fructis Strengthening 1 Minute Hair Mask ($5.79), Biosilk silk therapy drops ($24), and It’s a 10 Haircare Miracle Leave-In Conditioner ($14.95).

Apply hair masks weekly

Dimitris tells his clients to do a hair mask about once a week in the winter to ‘keep the hair feeling healthy, smooth, and shiny.’

He specifically encourages people to look for coconut oil as the ultimate ingredient in hair masks.

The celebrity hair pro called coconut oil ‘essential for nourishing the scalp and achieving that luscious hair look,’ naming the affordable and natural Raw Sugar Healing Power Hair Masque Avocado Oil + Banana + Coconut Milk + Agave ($10.49) as a favorite for weekly use. 

The mask ‘helps the scalp restore its natural oils and helps strands feel and look visibly smoother,’ according to Dimitris. 

Ray is also very much in favor of his A-list clients applying super hydrating weekly hair masks.

The expert urges his clients to wear protective styles in the winter months, cautioning that ‘colder and wetter weather can promote hair breakage in the wintertime.’ 

Don’t apply too much heat to your hair

You probably don’t want to walk outside with a damp mane, but it’s important to give your hair time to air dry or invest in heat protectant products as well as blowdryers and straighteners that won’t harm your hair. 

Celebrity hairstylist and Conair brand ambassador Laura Polko explained that it’s important to be careful when applying heat to your hair regularly, whether you’re using a blow dryer, curling iron or styling brush. 

‘During the winter, people blow dry their hair more frequently leading to heat damage, so be sure to use a hair dryer that mitigates heat damage,’ Laura, who works with Gigi Hadid, Alix Earle, and Madelyn Cline in Los Angeles, advised, suggesting the InfinitiPRO by Conair ($99.97).

‘Be careful applying extra heat on your hair, especially when its already sensitive to breakage due to the winter season,’ Laura continued. 

If you feel like you’re using too much heat, you can always try a product like Conair Heatless Rollers ($14.99), which Laura called ‘a great alternative,’ because it ‘helps avoid the over usage of heat on the hair no matter what look or whether the hair is damp or dry.’

Stop over-washing your hair

It’s tempting to start washing and conditioning more regularly when your hair feels dry, but unfortunately, that isn’t the answer and could actually lead to more issues, instead.

Orlando suggested limiting hair washing during the cold winter months, ‘because the natural oil your scalp secretes is helpful for beautiful hair.’ 

The hair pro explained that ‘over washing can strip the hair of these natural oils, leading to increased dryness.’ 

However, if you are still washing and conditioning regularly, watch out for build up, especially if you’re piling on conditioner to help your hair feel healthier.

Laura agreed that all that extra conditioning can lead to ‘additional product build up, which is why it’s ‘so important to massage your hair and ensure the extra gunk is out of your hair.’

Dimitris concurred that it’s best to wash your hair less during winter, suggesting once or twice a week to help with dryness and explaining, ‘Due to the colder environment, we are less likely to sweat which prevents our hair from getting oily.’ 

And once you’ve washed your hair, don’t go directly outside if it’s cold out. Dimitris said, ‘Considering your hair is the weakest when it’s wet, cold temperatures will only break and dry it out more.’ 

Instead, Dimitris suggested ‘thoroughly drying your hair after washing it and you can even protect it with a leave-in protector.’ 

Invest in a humidifier

Another top tip is using a humidifier in your bedroom, which Orlando said ‘is helpful in combatting the dryness to your skin and hair caused by the indoor heat.’ 

Dimitris agreed that a humidifier will ‘help hydrate your hair and prevent it from being dull and flat.’

Once you’ve invested in a humidifier, hydrating products, and a hair mask, you should be golden. 

Just make sure not to leave your house with wet locks and give them time to dry to avoid broken, dehydrated hair.
