Alongside cups of tea, fish and chips and hearty full English breakfasts, the simple sausage roll is another hearty British classic. 

In the UK, bakery chain Greggs sold around 2.5 million sausage rolls a week during 2016, according to The London Economist, which amounts to enough sausage rolls for one person to eat every day for 356,000 years. 

As a nation renowned in appreciating the simplicity of traditional foods, when someone meddles with and and attempts to overcomplicate a dish, it often triggers some form of backlash from an unhappy crowd. 

People were just as displeased recently with one creative food blogger, who bravely shared his recipe of Marmite cheese toasties – using flattened and deconstructed Greggs sausage rolls as the base.

The unnamed cook behind the account unveiled his newest recipe of cheese toasties made up of Greggs sausage rolls, cream and Cheddar cheese, Marmite and butter

Some of the blog’s chaotic creations include lasagna toast, Biscoff noodles, cottage pie enchiladas and pumpkin spiced latte brownies. 

In a video, shared to the page’s 260K followers and viewed over 2M times on August 13, the cook behind the account unveiled his newest recipe of cheese toasties made up of Greggs sausage rolls, cream and Cheddar cheese, Marmite and butter.

The food blogger demonstrates his step-by-step recipe by first declaring: ‘The only way to eat a Greggs sausage roll is to use them instead of bread in a toasted sandwich.’

He then takes two Greggs sausage rolls out of a pack of four and places them onto a chopping board, where he takes a rolling pin to flatten them into a thin base. 

The content creator then instructs the viewer to ‘glue them together’ using cream cheese, before topping with a generous helping of Cheddar cheese. 

The ‘toastie’ is then drizzled with lashings of Marmite and mayonnaise, before sprinkles of pepper are added.

The final two sausage rolls from the pack of four are used to conceal the contents of the toasted sandwich and ‘glued’ once more with cream cheese, before being transferred to a hot pan for frying. 

Removing his creation from the stove after it has finished cooking, the TikTok chef concludes: ‘Technically, you could share this with three other people and you’ll all be eating a sausage roll each. Long live the sossy-roll-wich.’

Outraged Brits took to both TikTok and X to share their distaste for the ‘hate crime’ recipe – even Greggs themselves had caught wind of the video and shared their shock

Outraged Brits took to both TikTok and X to share their distaste for the ‘hate crime’ recipe, with one person writing: ‘That’s pure savagery. This person needs to be arrested for a hate crime.’

Another viewer said, ‘The only way to eat a greggs sausage roll is to eat it,’ while a third wrote, ‘This is a crime against Greggs.’

One unimpressed individual commented, ‘My sausage roll is petrified now. As am I. Thanks,’ while another stressed, ‘I don’t know how to explain it but he’s Americanised it. It reminds me of those TikToks of people adding 7kg of cheese to make 1 meal.’

Even a Greggs employee was left rattled, writing: ‘As a Greggs employee I’m now terrified of selling these incase this happens again.’

The recipe had even been reposted on X by Greggs (@GreggsOfficial) themselves, who simply wrote: ‘*stunned silence*’

An overcooked match day sausage roll previously caused disgust among football fans in April – who likened it to something which was ‘found in Pompeii.’

An unidentified supporter said he paid £2.50 for the savoury pastry treat at Caledonian Stadium earlier this year as Inverness Caledonian Thistle took on Dundee.
