High street card shop with over 170 branches announces huge sale before closing store – and shoppers say it's a 'joke' | The Sun

CLINTONS is expected to close another store for good after announcing a huge closing down sale.

The greetings card shop is set to shut its Leeds City Centre store on Commercial Way.

The Leeds store has erected signs that say it will hold a closing down sale and some items will be up to 50% off, reports local media.

However, it's not yet clear when the store will close for good.

The Sun has contacted Clintons for comment.

Shoppers on Facebook were devastated after hearing the news and many said they were sad to see this and many other Clintons branches leaving the high street.

One user said: “No local store to go to and we can't even shop online anymore."

“Would be great to purchase the Christmas sets if there were any stores left near us,” another said.

A third user claimed: “My local Clintons has recently closed down.” 

And a fourth said: "It's getting out of hand now, its a joke. Clintons is one of the best card shops around."

The announcement follows a string of Clitons store closures earlier this year including Cumbria and Bolton.

Earlier this month shoppers in Daventry also said goodbye to their local store. 

Clintons has already found itself in hot water, only just escaping administration years ago when an American company bought the firm.

Originally, the Clintons planned to merge with the stationary brand Paperchase.

However, the struggling stationary retailer sadly went into administration at the start of the year.

Clintons then reportedly brought in advisers in August to put a plan in place to save it from insolvency.

The card retailer plans to close 38 of its 225 stores to try to stay afloat.

Despite losing beloved branches, Clintons continues to battle rivals such as Card Factory, Moonpig and Funky Pigeon.

At its peak, the retailer had 2,500 staff working across 335 shops.

A number of other retailers are struggling to keep stores open across the UK too.

The high street has suffered in recent years as consumers increasingly turn to online retail and away from physical branches.

Businesses have also been contending with increased energy and wage costs.

It has led to a number of high street retailers closing stores as they try to cut back on costs.

Some have gone bust completely too, including Wilko, Cath Kidston and M&Co.
