Velvet nails is this season’s festive manicure trend to ask for at your next salon appointment
Every Christmas amongst the sequins and satin, velvet reappears in our festive wardrobes, with dresses, trousers and even handbags getting a luxe, velvety upgrade to suit the party season.
It might be one of fashion’s favourite festive season trends, but it seems the beauty world wants in on the action this year too, with the luxurious fabric now making its way into our regular manicure appointments.
Fear not, though – we’re not on about attaching pieces of velour to our nails. Instead, we’re talking nail polishes that have a textured finish that gives the illusion of velvet and look so soft you could reach out and stroke them.
What are velvet nails?
Before rushing out to book your next mani appointment, you’ll probably want to know exactly what velvet nails are. Although the material itself doesn’t make an appearance in the manicure (it would be wildly impractical, after all), velvet nails instead blend together glitter and metallic nail varnishes that create the illusion of a velour-like texture thanks to the way the light catches them.
The clever light reflections mimic the way light catches real velvet, and gives your nails the illusion of a velvety smooth finish. Although you can use regular velvet-finish polishes, you (or your nail tech) can take it one step further with cat eye gel polishes which use magnets to create an even bigger illusion of a velvet finish that changes colour and texture depending on which angle you look at them.
How to get velvet nails at home
Although the easiest way to nail the velvet nail trend is to ask for it at your next manicure appointment, if you’re trying to save a little bit of money this festive season or are very much a DIY kinda person, you can still get the look at home.
Plenty of affordable beauty brands have launched their very own version of velvet nail polish, including Barry M, which has launched its Velvet Nail Paint, £2.99 here (was £3.99), in whole range of colours including a luxurious shade of navy and a festive deep red colour, which have a matte finish rather than the usual glitter metallic look.
However if you love the more metallic velvet nail look, you can get the DND Duo Gel & Nail Polish Set – Velvet 739, £9.78 here (was £11.50), which gives you two gel polishes needed to create the classic, reflective velvet look at home. You can also get your hands on the Mylee Magnet Duo for Cat Eye Gel Nail Polish, £5.94 here (was £6.99), which is essential for creating a more elevated cat eye-style manicure without having to head to the nail salon.
Whichever way you choose to wear it, it’s official – velvet is the texture of the season.
