Loose Women’s Nadia Sawalha’s feud with sister Julia – jealousy to not speaking

Nadia Sawalha’s trouble with her sister Julia has been rumbling on for years, with stories about the strife between the pair hitting the headlines every now and then.

The siblings apparently go through ups and downs and both Loose Women star Nadia and Absolutely Fabulous actress Julia – who starred as Saffy in the comedy – have addressed their troubles publicly, admitting their relationship hasn't always been smooth sailing.

Nadia has called the relationship "volatile". And Julia, who also voiced Ginger in Chicken Run, has said they've had periods of being close then distant. But what really went wrong between the pair?

As Chicken Run 2 hits screens, we have had a lookback at the sisters' on-off feud.

While many siblings are hit with rivalries, they've struggled over the years and have been through periods of being very close, and then not speaking. But during the good times, it's been very "intense", Julia has said.

So what happened throughout their lives to get them this way? Let's take a look…

How did it get started?

Nadia and Julia grew up in South London along with their other sister Dina. Nadia is four years older than her little sister and has previously been quoted as saying that after Julia was born, she was so excited that she kept wanting to pick up the baby and cuddle her.

“My mum, who was a bit postnatal, got scared and sent me to her mother’s,” she once said. "Julia was a beautiful baby and everyone was crazy about her, so my sister Dina and I were a bit jealous.”

However, it seems the trouble really started around 2002 when Julia was dating comedian Alan Davies. The story goes that Nadia called him “miserable”, leading her and Julia to fall out and stop talking.

Intense relationship

In 2007, Julia told The Times the sisters were sometimes close but distant at other times. “Nadia and I have always had a very intense relationship, and there have been moments in my life when I've felt very close to her and I had the love I wanted from her,” she said.

“But there were also times when she'd keep me at a distance, which really confused me.”

Nadia opens up on Loose Women

Things flared up in 2019 when Nadia opened up about her relationship with Julia on Loose Women.

“She's amazing my sister, but we've always had a really volatile relationship and have always had periods of time in our lives where we don't speak,” she said. “But I also have the worst time or best time in my life with her.”

Julia also responded publicly, posting on Twitter: “So tired of #nadiasawalha talking about our ‘stormy’ relationship which she created. I’ve kept my privacy for 6 years to protect my family, while she talks lies and rubbish. You have destroyed our family, so don’t sit on TV with your fake tears to gain sympathy & attention."
