Chris Packham flooded with Ofcom complaints over controversial law-breaking show

Chris Packham teases his Channel 4 climate change documentary

Chris Packham’s Channel 4 documentary, titled Is It Time To Break The Law?, has been hit with a wave of Ofcom complaints following backlash from viewers.

Receiving 267 complaints, it’s believed the majority of them were related to the programme condoning and inciting lawbreaking.

During the one-hour special, people watched as the naturalist questioned whether it was ethically acceptable to break the law to protest against government policies on climate change.

As he asked if the nation is “sleepwalking into an apocalypse” the 62-year-old spoke to activist groups such as Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion who have carried out disruptive stunts in protest.

Airing last Wednesday night, the Springwatch host gave alarming figures as he revealed that 69 per cent of life on earth has disappeared since first getting into wildlife as a kid.

In the opening of the documentary, Chris said: “I’ve reached a fork in the road. For years I’ve been a peaceful activist but none of it has worked. Perhaps I have to take another route.”

Although he didn’t break the law within the documentary, Chris met a string of activists who believed that mass civil disobedience was essential to force change.

However, it seemed as though many viewers were left outraged by the documentary with 267 taking action by complaining to Ofcom.

On the night, people shared their thoughts on social media with @JezzaG25 commenting: “He’s telling people it’s ok to break the law #ChrisPackhamC4 #ChrisPackham should be locked up for scare-mongering and encouraging illegal activity as should @Channel4 for allowing him a platform #climatescam #ClimateCrisis-mya**e.”

@magwitch5151 tweeted: “If thousands do break the law which is now ethically and morally justified where will they put us all? The justice system would collapse. #isittimetobreakthelaw #chrispackhamC4.”

Although some people praised Chris’ documentary with @andrewstephen5 adding: “#ChrisPackham legend.”

With @Cogs39 commenting: “Feeling fired up after watching #chrispackhamc4 & definitely want to get more involved in protecting the planet. Not sure of next steps though.”

Ahead of the episode airing, Chris came to blows with Good Morning Britain’s Richard Madeley .

He fumed: “What gives you the right to say that you have the overview, that gives the authority to say, ‘You can do this, you have my support, break the law?’

Chris replied: “I have no right and no overview, nor do I profess to have it.

“I merely ask the question, is this the right time for us to break the law? As you’ve pointed out, climate protestors are already breaking the law.”

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV from 6am.
