Great British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood blasts America’s favourite snack

GBBO: Paul Hollywood walks off after technical challenge goes wrong

Paul Hollywood is known for being the harshest judge on the Great British Bake Off, so it should come as no surprise that he is pretty brutal in his disdain for one of America’s lunch box staples – The Twinkie.

The celebrity chef recently told Page Six about his experience tasting the classic Hostess snack while he was in New York City in 2022.

“Oh, they’re awful!” he said, adding, “They’re really bad.”

While Twinkies may not be his cup of tea, he does admit to enjoying some junk food, specifically a well-known British treat called a Yum Yum.

Which he describes as “a laminated dough, which you deep-fry like a donut and you cover it with a lemon icing.”

“Calorific wise, it’s probably about 2,000 calories,” Hollywood admits. “It’s ridiculous, but if I’m in a supermarket and see it pre-packed, I’m going to quietly put it in my basket.”

Hollywood may not be indulging in Twinkies this holiday season, but he is busy judging bakes and dolling out handshakes from time to time as season 14 of GBBO is currently airing new episodes Fridays on Netflix, and season 2 of The Great American Baking Show is currently airing Roku.

On both shows, Hollywood and his co-star Prue Leith judge send bakers home each week. In the American version, those bakers are celebrities, not home bakers.

The current season includes Saturday Night Live star Ego Nwodim, House of Villains host Joel McHale and Narcos star Arturo Castro, who will be competing for the coveted cake stand and Star Baker crown.

Hollywood, who has been a part of the show since its inception in 2010, understand the appeal of the laid back show.

“It’s one of those shows that you can relax and don’t feel threatened by and just can watch and get into the tent,” he explained. “The tent has become quite a focal point for people. It’s a place that everyone loves to come to visit.

Not only is he starring on two shows at once, he, Leith and some of the bakers are offing up fresh twists on old favourites in a new Bake Off book.

In fact, in a note from the book, Hollywood explains that not only are they giving away secrets to some of the most iconic bakes from the show, they are also telling the stories of the bakers that created them.

“Each year we discover incredible stories behind the bakers’ passions, but this year has blown me away. With a brief to add a fresh twist to the classic recipes we all know and love, the bakers created truly awe-inspiring signature dishes.”

“Their creations don’t just update old favourites, but – like all the best bakes – reveal stories about the people behind them,” Hollywood added.
