Kate Garraway chokes back tears over treatment that helped Derek speak again
Chris Kamara thanks Kate for recommending treatment trial
Kate Garraway choked back tears during Thursday’s Good Morning Britain while chatting to Chris Kamara about her husband Derek Draper and the treatment he has received to help him speak again.
It was an emotional moment, as Chris thanked Kate for recommending the treatment which has been helping him with his speech.
The football pundit, who was diagnosed with Apraxia of speech, admitted to feeling “ashamed” that he was unable to speak and has been receiving a new treatment in Mexico.
He said in the interview: “Talking to Kate, as you know Ben, I went to Mexico for some experimental treatment and it’s working.”
Kate looked emotional as she replied: “Well it’s wonderful, that’s something I was nervous talking to you about, it’s something Derek has had treatment for, I couldn’t guarantee anything, they couldn’t guarantee anything because it’s very new but you feel it’s really helped you which is incredible.”

Kammy went on: “Ah, amazing. When I’m not talking about the speech, because it’s psychosomatic so it slows down when you’re talking about it, the brain is so complex.
“So when you talk about good things, like football and stuff like that, my voice goes back or if I try and put on a Scottish accent, you know you can talk fluently… The brain is crazy.”
The GMB host continued: “It’s so complex and what you’re doing as well, talking about that shame that you felt and that it defined you.
“The truth is that any kind of brain injury affects the way that people perceive you doesn’t it, it affects that relationship with others, so by saying it doesn’t define you, you’re championing it for a lot of other people.”

Kate often speaks about how her husband has been doing ever since he fell ill in March 2020.
Derek suffered a number of complications and was put in an induced coma after contracting COVID-19.
After a year of being in hospital, Kate’s husband was allowed home and still requires daily care.
Elsewhere in the chat, Ben Shephard hugged his pal after he broke down in tears.
Detailing how he felt when his speech started to deteriorate, Kammy shared: “The [words] come out very slow so I thought that defined me. So, my apologies to everybody who’s got a speech condition because it doesn’t define who you are.
“I get upset talking about it because I was in denial, I was ashamed that I couldn’t speak.”
“You’ve got nothing to be ashamed of honestly, you’ve done so much to inspire other people,” Susanna replied as she reached over to grab Kammy’s hand.
“I know Ben, you’ve had experiences haven’t you, where you’ve spoken to other people who are no longer ashamed of what they’re experiencing because of the way [Chris has] spoken out about it.”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
